Tito's in West LA is the most over-hyped Mexican food in So Cal, it is average at best.
I agree... Their tacos suck.

There is this really nice Mexican restaurant called La Barca in Downey. Very authentic and high class.
Mexican American paradise ✊🏼 😎
If you have the time, La Puta Blanca in Blythe
There are tons of them. But if you want a good burrito, in particular a good breakfast burrito, there is a place called Tito’s Bakery in Long Beach. Really good and cash only.

I like the following places:
La Barca in Downey (variety of food)
Tacos El Gordo in Chula Vista/Vegas (adobada tacos)
Colonia Publica in Whittier (sopa de fideo)
Carnitas El Momo in Boyle Heights (carnitas tacos)
Aqui es Texcoco in Chula Vista/Commerce (barbacoa/lam
La Casita Mexicana in Bell (enchiladas)
There's many more but that's all I could think of at the moment. There are plenty of roach coaches in Boyle Heights and East LA with good street tacos too.

Don Cuco's Toluca Lake - Best by far.
Las Cuatro Milpas in Barrio Logan, San Diego. Nothing fancy, cash only, no booze and there is always a line out the door. That was a pre-covid line out the door. Very authentic with a limited menu.
Another good spot for burritos is Tacos Villa Corona in Atwater Village. It's just a family owned hole in the wall but I think it's good and sell out early. No booze and no tables though.

La Siesta in San Clemente has been shut down by the health department a few times in the last few years. We went there for over 20 years, until the brothers decided to part ways and the wrong brother kept La Siesta. My favorite cook left too, so it wasn't as good as it used to be. I used to say it was the best in the area.
