Should we naively delighted with Trump wearing a mask finally? It is just a belated "gesture" for him, nothing else. If he was really serious about rising infection and death, he would have done it long time ago.
He would have mandated wearing masks nationally, and he would not have distanced Fauci, he would not blamed him for everything what went wrong (his usual tactics when things go wrong,, he needs someone to blame on), he would have started manufacturing PPE and testing materials in the US a long time ago (why are we still in shortage after 4 month of this pandemic). He would not have threatened to open schools in the middle of the second surge of infection and death after March. He would not have dictated CDC what to do about the coronavirus guidance.
The biggest problem we have is that we can not even trust CDC anymore. Dr Redfield is an Evangelical, and as you know Evangelicals support Trump without any objection. In the past, Dr Redfield let AIDS patients die without a proper treatment during 1980's because AIDS was an evil disease. How can we trust this kind of guy at the head of CDC.
Underfunded, and dictated by Trump for its issuing any guidance regarding coronavirus infection, CDC is became the least trusted organization now. If Trump disliked the strict guidance, he literally orders CDC or should I say Dr Redfield (aka Dr Death) to loosen the guidance.
It is not just me criticizing CDC, all the major public health organization such as American Heart Association, American Lung Association (nearly 350 organization) submitted a letter of protest to Alex Azar (HHS secretary, another henchman of Trump administration, and an advocate for pharmaceutical companies) regarding CDC becoming a political agency. Plus it is more of not giving it to somebody than protecting yourself, because 80% or more transmission is done via people with no symptoms or during its incubation period.

While the Japanese are used to wearing masks, they also do a very intensive contact backtracing and other techniques to reduce transmission. Each country, due to customs, medical system, federal vs. State powers, etc operates differently. It is completely ridiculous to think that the US would operate the same as Japan or China or Norway.....for a variety of reasons.

@Thresher .... This copied from the article gives one studies dindings on rhe effectiveness of all types of masks. Most of the population is using a mask that is less than 38 % effective. Please not that these masks you are buying at 7-11 for like 15 bucks a 10 pack are NOT meeting any standard sooo you takes ya chances.
When someone posts a link before asking "where does it say that?" the courteous thing to do would be to read what is there or if you don't read it don't question what you are too lazy to find out.
Filter efficiency was measured across a wide range of small particle sizes (0.02 to 1 µm) at 33 and 99 L/min.
N95 respirators had efficiencies greater than 95% (as expected).
T-shirts had 10% efficiency,
Scarves 10% to 20%,
Cloth masks 10% to 30%,
Sweatshirts 20% to 40%, and
Towels 40%.
All of the cloth masks and materials had near zero efficiency at 0.3 µm, a particle size that easily penetrates into the lungs.
Another study evaluated 44 masks, respirators, and other materials with similar methods and small aerosols (0.08 and 0.22 µm).
N95 FFR filter efficiency was greater than 95%.
Medical masks – 55% efficiency
General masks – 38% and
Handkerchiefs – 2% (one layer) to 13% (four layers) efficiency.
Conclusion: Wearing masks will not reduce SARS-CoV-2.
N95 masks protect health care workers, but are not recommended for source control transmission.
Surgical masks are better than cloth but not very efficient at preventing emissions from infected patients.
Cloth masks will be ineffective at preventing SARS-CoV-2 transmission, whether worn as source control or as personal protective equipment (PPE).

I think what masks really are effective at is preventing the droplets from traveling very far. Droplets travel far less distance when you wear a mask. Even a bandana helps in this regard. So it's the wearer who is protecting others.

They could be only 3-5 % effective... Im a something is better than nothing guy. But Im not militant about any of these things if you are in risky situations mitigate the risk if you can.... But some people are Peacocks ....and ya gotta let em fly!!!!

I think they are minimally effective if you're going to measure how many droplets get through to the other side of the mask, but I think they are much more effective than that at mitigating how many droplets reach a person 1-3 feet away.
