Will the Senate be able to move fast enough to confirm a nominee if Trump loses or if they lose their majority in the Election?
The left will (rightfully) scream bloody murder, since the right held up The Obama pick in a similar situation/timeframe... but that is politics. Those who have the power use it while they can to further their agenda.

Didn't the GOP say a Supreme Court Judge shouldn't be replaced in an election year?
Isn't that the reason they didn't vote on Obama's appointee M. Garland?
If they tried to do that, after what they did in 2016 that would be totally corrupt!
It would be almost as corrupt as passing a revenue bill that didn't originate in the House of Representatives without a single vote from the minority party. I remember a Democrat saying that elections have consequences.
How dare you to call Republicans currupt Hypocrites they are ,law abiding, constitution loving, God living ,fair, evangelist, they do what bible teach them to do , and they always elect a moral , god loving president lol
The Republicans and Trump will do it if they genuinely believe that Trump has zero chance of winning in November. Consolidate all the power and control you have, stack the courts and the SCOTUS, and ride out 4 Biden years.
Because that kind of hypocrisy would absolutely cost Trump the election otherwise. If they do it, they know he's already done.
I hope not...we need 4 more years...when Biden's response to reviving the COVID economy is to raise taxes, where do you think we're headed except into another Obamaesque recession???
"Obamaesque recession" is revisionist history... the fact that the economy grew at a modest 2% after the recovery from the Bush induced depression is true, and the economy , unemployment at all time lows, stock market at all time highs, great corporate profits for large company's due to lower taxes is all under Trump is true...as well as the largest deficit. And with the economy in the tank right now due to covid, there will be little opportunities to whittle away at the debt for the foreseeable future.
But I strayed from OP topic...you bet the 'Pubs are gonna nominate and fast track a conservative judge from the Federalist Society list . They won't even bat an eye...but they need to vet them better because Gorsuch and Cavanaugh have already strayed from the Trumpian agenda (but not the conservative one).
like obanana was a law and order candidate, the worst crime and hypocrisy in history
if we're lucky enough that she croaks soon, they still won't try and nominate another justice before the election, but after trump wins, they will on day 1
It’s exactly what the republicans would do. And every democrat would scream at the top of their lungs. And every Republican senator, including Mitt Romney would vote for the nominee.
The realty is.... who ever controls the senate, controls the confirmation process. And whoever controls the process will use that control to THEIR favor.
You can say, “But you said.... last time!”
They will say, “Yeah we did but....”
And if you don’t think the Democrats would have pushed their nominee through in 2016 election year or not... your drunk.
They would have... they just couldn’t.
Democrats control congress... they wield their majority to their benefit. Republicans bitch and moan about it. Cry me a river.
First - she has a bile duct stent and it was cleaned out at least once BEFORE they announced her liver cancer. This means she's had it for a while along with prior bouts of pancreatic and Lung cancer. Bile duct jams are usually fatal and most don't make it more than a year. She could be hanging out at Bernie's right now for all we know.
Second - Obama nominated Garland while a lame duck president (oxymoron?) so not exactly the same situation. Using a CLEAR LENS (for all you partisans), if she passes (hope not) after the election and Trump were to lose, I would guess no nomination would happen until after inauguration. Were Trump to win I would think the Senate would move forward.
If they do try to fast track someone, though, I predict that the GOP won't see a Senate majority for a generation or two. Face it, far-right conservatives are dying off, and younger voters will remember.
"Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday if a Supreme Court vacancy occurs during next year's presidential election, he would work to confirm a nominee appointed by President Donald Trump."
The Republicans WANT and NEED it to be a campaign issue to wake people up and realize what is at stake for possibly generations to come, they will never get a chance like this again and both sides know it
it was helpful in 2016...4 more years of judges could help stem the tide for next 25 years of bullshit...buys some time for more blacks and Hispanics to get on board
will see some big migrations in this election coming up
None of you seem to recall that Harry Reid did away with confirmation of judges, except for SCOTUS.
That's how Trump has gotten so many judges on the lower courts, careful what you wish for
Now Biden wants to get rid of the Senate filibuster cause the Dems gotta move fast if he gets elected and who would want that pesky minority party to get in the way, amirite?
It will come back to bite Dems in the ass just like Reid's move did.
The whole point of the filibuster in the Senate is to slow roll crazy bullshit and has been there since the beginning of the Republic
I don't recall Dems wanting to get rid of it when Trump got elected but maybe they just forgot......
would prefer just to have an election with trump, senate and congress winning without a country freaking out before the election on this stuff...she would probably step down at end of the year if that happened
she's definitely sacrificing her life for the cause
RBG is selfish even Thurgood Marshall knew when to hang up the robe because of age. At this point it’s strictly about agenda. She had the chance to play more with the grandchildren when Obama was in office.
Trump has his short list already. If she dies before the election.... he will name his nominee. If Trump loses, and/or the Repubs lose their majority the senate will rush to confirm before the inauguration.
People will scream... it will be ugly... because unless something strange happens ... the next vacancy will probably be Breyer (81). He seems spry so could outlast Thomas(72).... but probably not. So it could be 8-10 years.
Right now it’s technically 5-4 but both Roberts and Gorsuch have not been in lockstep with the conservative side of the court. So... adding a 6th conservative will give the right the confidence to wait out Breyer.
The Dems will be powerless to stop them. They (Repubs) will not just let go of the opportunity to sit another Supreme Court judge. The only reason it happened in 16 was because the Republicans controlled the process and the Democrats could do nothing about it.
If the Dems could have gotten Garland confirmed... they would have.
The Republicans will not let that opportunity pass if Ginsburg doesn’t make it.
"If the Dems could have gotten Garland confirmed... they would have."
REALLY?
Explain how they could have achieved this with the GOP in control of the Senate and Mumbling Mitch saying he would not even bring Obama's nominee to the floor.
No wonder they call you Doofey. That was my point. They couldn’t... that is the ONLY reason they didn’t.
It’s not like they agreed... “yeah... this is an election year. We should wait til November to see the will of the people.”
ISOS... she has to live until Christmas. If she dies before Christmas... if Trump loses, and or the Repubs lose the senate... Trump will nominate... and the senate will confirm by midnight January 19, 2021.
Bet on it. If they both win... they will wait. If one or both lose... it will be the one of the fastest confirmations in History. I think they confirmed Stevens in 19 days, O’Connor in 33 and Roberts (the second time) 23. So it’s not unprecedented time wise.
Using your legal power to your advantage is not corrupt. We may agree they shouldn’t do it... but it’s not corrupt.
Same with the congressional impeachment hearings. I didn’t think the Dems should have bulldozed the hearings... but they had the power to do so. It wasn’t corrupt.
Corrupt: "having or showing a willingness to act dishonestly in return for money or personal gain."
In this case acting dishonestly by not doing what they are there to do. Vote on Supreme Court justices when they become available is one of those responsibilities.
The personal gain for the GOP was to confirm the justice they wanted.
YES STRAIGHT MOTHERFUCKIN CORRUPT!
.....also Kurupt the rapper from the Dogg Pound lol
Again... things aren’t just what you WANT them to be.
“Vote on Supreme Court justices when they become available is one of those responsibilities. “
Please show me where this part of their job description is listed that gives any particular time table.
Just because you don’t like something... doesn’t make it corrupt... but you continually misuse the word because it makes you feel better. Have at it.
Do you think when the Dems controlled the senate they didn’t slow walk federal court judge vacancy confirmations. It’s the game Doofey.
Dems had the Senate in 07-08 and held up most of Bush’s nominations.
The only reason it hasn’t happened more is the Democrats have not been able to regain control of the senate. When they do... the game will be reversed.
"Bush induced depression" is what is really revisionist history!
Talk to Barney Frank and the Democrats all the way back to the Clinton Administration who decided that everyone deserved a home loan, and that everyone should get a home, and that we can finance it all by turning mortgages into securities and hedge the losses by packaging good loans with a few bad ones, and then everyone wins...
Until there's more bad ones than good and they crashed the entire financial system. You don't REALLY think that was Bush's doing now, do ya?
He was on watch, that's for sure. But so were a lot of other people. They should have known better.
And Obama gets the credit for the meekest economic recovery since the great depression. Over taxed, over regulated, and systematically stymied. As soon as Trump took the government boot off of the back of everyone's neck, the economy exploded with growth!
The move is corrupt..........even if the Dems had of pull that shit.
But now since the GOP did that shit they have opened themselves up for payback somewhere down the line.
