It has been a number of years since I went to China as a tourist. However one person I work with visits his parents at least once a year in China and he basically says China is under tighter control since I last visited. Another person I know happened to be in the US when Tiananmen Square happened and is now a U.S. Citizen. He has been back to China recently and he still has plenty of contacts living there. His opinion is also closer to jindd1328 than CGEM.

The turnover in 1997 promised that China, Hong Kong and Macao would be "one country, two systems." This was a treaty signed generations ago, so of course the "turnover" then was peaceful - on paper - and relied on the CCP respecting that agreement.
