Naomi Osaka and the Media's Response to Mental Health Issues
Jun 1 2021 11:44AM more by jimbo0618
Tags: LA, Current Events (All tags)

Tennis player Naomi Osaka decided to stop playing in the French Open after receiving a fine for not speaking with the media after her 1st match win. She claims that her mental health was in jeopardy due to the unnecessary and in case mean spirited questions that the media was asking her due to her last loss on clay court. One of the tennis broadcaster that vilified her was John McEnroe who called her a Brat! This was total hypocrisy on McEnroe's part! I love the game of tennis and played it semi-professionally when I was younger. McEnroe's on-court antics was horrible and disrespectful to the game and U.S.T.A. . He caused mental health issues for the judges, his fellow opponents, and for viewers. It was shameful to watch him act like a BRAT on national TV and it was every match that he acted that way. He should be the last person calling someone a BRAT! Naomi is a great player but as she said that she is not a public speaker and an introvert. If she feels that her mental health is at jeopardy, then she needs to do what is best for her.

If it were up to me, I would ban reporters from sport events. They just ask dumb questions anyway.

But I understand that they are vital for the health of the sport. Media coverage is a necessity for the sport. People need should leave her alone. She took the penalty fine and said she would speak to reporters after the event. Reporters should have accepted that.

Athletes have an obligation to speak to media. It part of what they paid to do in their profession.

Obligation to speak to the media.

Bingo!

There are few - if ANY professions that lack tough questions of one form or another.
Period.

She has also a long history of depression. Mental health is a real thing. Often more difficult to deal with than a bad ankle for instance. Her position should be supported not vilified.

It was disgusting when they made her feel bad and cry when she beat Serena at the US Open

And the worst offender was the overly crazy entitled finals loser Serena
The lack of class shown by the 20 time champion for this young winner was eye watering

No class no empathy

Osaka has earned over $55 million over the past 12 months, some from playing tennis but mostly from endorsements, etc.

She can afford to hire the best psychologists, media consultants, etc. in the world. Has she said anything about what therapy or other help she's getting for her problems?

This clip from Bedazzled

Every sports interview ever, it's only become more toxic today.
French Open's response to Naomi Osaka is a shameful moment for tennis.

"I've often felt that people have no regard for athletes [sic] mental health and this rings very true whenever I see a press conference or partake in one," Osaka wrote in a note she shared on Twitter. "I've watched many clips of athletes breaking down after a loss in a press room and I know you have as well. I believe the whole situation is kicking a person while they're down and I don't understand the reasoning behind it."

I support Naomi Osaka. I think it is great that people are more up front about revealing mental health issues. It does not make them weak. Also, look at famous people who seemingly self-destructed in front of the world over the last century. Many viewed it as entertainment, or tragedy, but they were clearly fighting inner demons without getting proper help.

If you can’t handle the heat get out of the kitchen!! She has made enough money to hire the best therapist money can buy , most of her fans probably struggle to get health insurance. Serena is the biggest hypocrite in the sport look at how she tested Osaka in her loss at the US Open!
