I buy apple products they have lasted over 5 year plus.
If you can find the programs that do what you want on
IOS system you will be ahead.
this is my opinion and experience
I hope this helps.

windows 11 only needs tpm 2.0 ready.
whatever hardware did not run on w10 most likely will not run on w11
Dahlia, what are some of the laptops you purchased last time?
what model did the geek squad recommend?

I think you pay quite a premium for a Mac product, but yes they do last awhile. Costco has pretty good deals and they give a 2 year warranty.
Given your needs ("I use it mainly for work presentations, work meetings and inventory.. things of that nature. I do not play games, watch movies or store music. ") you can probably do well for under a grand. You may want to think about a laptop with a touch screen.

I meant Costco has pretty good deals on Windows laptops.

Get a 13” MacBook Pro maxed out. 16 gb mem (or more, don’t know the max specs are atm) and ssd hd.
Also get a cinema display for home base. That way you can go huge desktop at home and have
a great portable laptop on the road.

FlappyNutSack....the premium prices on the new Macs with the M1 processor aren't an issue anymore. I bought a base model Macbook Air for $899 and it easily outperforms a desktop machine I have with a Ryzen 7 processor. That macbook air has no fan, so it is silent and it never gets hot.
Apple no longer has to pay Intel a premium price for processors, so they're able to charge less.

Oh hey, that’s good to know. I need something new for my crypto development environment.

One more for a Mac. I update my MBPs for work a lot but still have 10+year pld iMac and MacBook putting in work

If you aren't using a lot of data storage on your computer, I have had good luck with my Lenovo Chromebook. Google has programs similar to Windows, and everything is stored in the Google cloud storage, They are dirt cheap, and are really fast.

Mac's on apple silicon is an exercise in premium gouging. You are essentially paying for an augmented ipad pro. I ceased developing for MacOS/iOS as I no longer feel it's a fair market to developers. That being said, for the last 3 years I've used a Dell XPS 15, which I have been very happy with, replacing the last MacBook Pro I've bought.
|
|
apple products are expensive and it seems you may not want to pay that much. i have always had good luck with Asus not that good of luck with HP or dell. i had to replace power transformer on dell within 2 years amd the hp i use for work 2 of the 3 usb ports dont work and it wont hold a charge in the battery.

I was an Apple user until I figured out I stopped needing more than an iPad. I recently jumped into windows again with an EVOO laptop. Almost a year of moderate use same as you and no issues in performance

I got mine on a Black Friday deal for $300

Apple macbook air with Apple's M1 chip (not Intel). 18 hr battery life and smooth as butter. Worth it as who wants to spend time being frustrated with a slow computers. Should last you many years.

toshiba or mac. you choose your os. remember that thing about "compatibility", not just for dating.. XD
|
|
the thing with long lasting,, is new tech availing every year, so,,,
find the highest grade processor. dont worry about storage,, get a 2tb storage unit. clean your laptop frequently,, it will last atleast 5 yeats...

also, learn how to read the stats yourself, so you dont have to rely on others to feed your brain informations's...

I like the Microsoft Surface Pro Laptop or Tablet.
Very lightweight and also can use a pen for notes.
I used to like apple but now that they are leaving intel processors, who knows.

Lenovo Flex 5 14" 2-in-1 Laptop, 14.0" FHD (1920 x 1080) Touch Display, AMD Ryzen 5 4500U Processor, 16GB DDR4, 256GB SSD, AMD Radeon Graphics, Digital Pen Included, Win 10 $600
I'll start with that. I assume that you don't want to change the team. Otherwise, there are better Chromebook offerings from the same companies.
If you don't drop them, it's hard to die, including Chinese, Taiwanese-made laptops. (And don't block the vents.) Same with all brands, the battery will need more charging. If you abuse the keys too much, it's hard to replace the whole keyboard. Otherwise, the screen is easily replaceable if you want to.
I think 2-in-1 is better suited for presentation with a touch screen and a digital pen. Because of the screen, they are not the thinnest or lightest but respectable.
Unless you carry around your laptop a lot, it's a lot more comfortable working with 14" screen when you sit down, than the smallest 11" screen. Since the edges are a lot narrower, the newer 14" aren't much bigger than the older 11" ones, and about the same as older 13". And you don't need a 4K screen if you don't watch 4K movies on the laptop.
For processor choice, you can do a google search on "benchmark cpu". Find out what your current cpu is and where it is on the charts. The AMD Ryzen 5 4500U should be faster to twice as fast. The M1 is faster but the price is proportional. The same Lenovo has faster or slower CPUs so it depends on what you want to pay.
The memory 16GB DDR4, and storage 256GB SSD are pretty standard, on the sufficient side. Same as Macbook air. If you save your files safely on the Microsoft or Google cloud you don't need a big external drive.
And it's compatible with Win 11.

I've used my last Chromebook for about 7 years.
Can't go wrong - $200 - boom, done.
If it's for the hobby, it's hard to go wrong, course, if you want to go spend over a grand, sure go the Mac route.

I'm a business user as well (no longer crunching dev apps in the background all day, thank god).
Travel a bit with it so weight and repair support is important. The last few have been Dell brand, HP before that. Last purchase I moved to a 15" and like the frame size better. Weight is a non-issue but bigger = little bit heavier.
Recently helped a friend get a comparable 16" Macbook Pro and I have to say that is a very nice machine. @ $2400 minimum it aint cheap. Also it is twice as heavy as my current Dell. Both have 4k so no advantage on either machine. Sound is way better on the MBP.

Thanks everyone!!!!

Dahlia, if the reason your computer died was the hard drive, you can potentially replace it with an SD drive (SSD) and keep the computer you have.
If it isn’t cost effective to replace the drive, then make sure your next computer has an SSD which is shockproof. Hard drives fail much more easily if you drop or bump the laptop.
Apple is the most reliable computer from my experience, but may not be compatible with some of your business software. Buying through Costco is the best and often the cheapest option.

From my experience, neither Dell nor HP will hold up well as a workhorse, 60-hours-a-week computer.
I am now partial to Lenovo. Their customer service is very good (which you cannot say for HP or Dell) and last time I bought a computer, the extended warranty (through Lenovo, NOT through the retailer) was very inexpensive.
If you open up a Dell or HP and look inside, versus inside a Lenovo, you will immediately see the difference in quality. The Lenovo has better layout, more care taken with wire placement, etc. Also, more brand-name parts and less generic junk parts.

I'm a Windows guy - and found excellent longevity with Lenovo Laptops for personal and Business.
In fact, I'm writing this note on my Yoga 2 pro (2012) laptop that still works great.
For my job, I get our sales guys Macbooks because........ thats what they want. Always cost above $1500 before taxes.
For everyone else, they get Lenovo's. Usually about $1000 or so and I pay an extra $150 bucks for 3 yr onsite warranty and when anything happens, they have access to enhanced service and when something needs replacing, someone goes to THEM, wherever they are, to fix any hardware issues.
Do I have complaints about em? Sure. No company is perfect.
I also agree with the posters here about Costco.
Good luck with your search!

Wow!! this blog is full of so.much information!!! Thank you all, for your time and efforts, you are all very much appreciated!

I have a MacBook and I have to admit that it sucks. I have pretty much relegated my MacBook for using iTunes. Now, even that has been taken over by my smart phone. The lap top I had previously was an HP which handled itself very well until it contracted a virus during a lapse in virus protection. But even after wiping it clean, it still worked great. So, I'm stuck with an Apple for a while until it takes a dump. But I would stay away from it.

bought a great used dell laptop on ebay last summer....looked at same model before getting my monster acer laptop. needed a back up for bedroom/bathroom 4k non touch matte screen is most important thing for my eyes(looking at 4k cam girls)
700 bucks....ok if it needed a few hundred in repairs over next few years.
this ebay listing looks great if can get for under 1050 bucks for close...ends in an hour
|
|
1050 not happening on it...went for 1375

Go to Costco and get a Lenovo Thinkpad. Very durable and many different specs trip choose from. Will do everything you need for half there price of a MacBook. Used by many a field service professional in the field because they last.
|
|
cousin just went to costco...got the citi costco credit card and bought a decent HP laptop. buying it with the costco credit card doubles the warranty...so 4-5 years of coverage for free. BestBuy charges a lot, but they pay it off every time when they can't fix it
Costco warranty and period to take it back is big selling point
|

Costco / Lenovo - cant go wrong.
keep in mind most laptops need cooling and often having the laptop laying in bed where it cannot cool will kill it - eventually. If you must use it in bed, get a tray for it so it can "breathe".
|
|
I recently bought a Lenovo at Costco and am very impressed with it. I previously had Dells and they held up for me. I actually still have both of my Dells and loved the XPS 2 in 1. Stay away from HP they are crap and I have had nothing but headaches with them,

New MacBook Pros are great! While pricey they are great for an "All Purpose" machine. It comes with a lot of GREAT built in creative programs (for video / photo editing, music, etc...). All in all, if it is within your budget, I would recommend.
With PC laptops (windows computers...dell, HP, etc...) unless you are going for a more heavy duty machine from a gaming company (which outside of gaming and film editing is a bit overkill), they are build sloppily and cheaply.
HP fills their machines with bloatware (software that is meant to get you to buy more products, and just takes up space), and Dell has lost their quality over a decade ago.
IF you are looking for a PC laptop (Windows), Microsoft's Surface / Surface Pro will probably give you most for your money (again outside gaming / editing laptops)
TLDR:
Apple: Macbook Pro
Windows: Microsoft Surface / Surface Pro

Nice tip, about the need for cooling/air flow.
|
|
after a couple of years they start heating up
simple clipboard will help and not be too bulky or change your eye levels
|

When you say die on you what does that mean? Actually stop working or have problems doing something? I've had Dell laptops for years and they're almost bulletproof. The only reason I got rid of them is they were so old they wouldn't take the newer operating systems that came out. If you don't play games, watch videos or other stuff like that get a business class laptop that tend to be stronger and better built than consumer models.

Bunch of Apple fanbois in here.
I've been in IT for 20 years and worked with every major brand out there. The only ones that dont last beyond 2 years are because of user abuse.
If you have a tendency to drop your system all the time or leave it on the roof of your car then you may way to look at a Panasonic Toughbook. Its what the Army gives to its troops for field work.
Otherwise cant go wrong with any of the above suggestions.

think you might be the new GOTO on laps/computers
