Pour one out for drunken Chief Wahoo, the most offensive yet likeable logo in all of sports.
Guardians is lame as fuck too, the Steamers was right there for the taking, SMDH...

Growing up in Baton Rouge Louisiana I heard the Yankees beat the South, but that is no reason for a baseball team to be called the Yankees. The MLB is comprised of women beaters like multi millionaire Trevor Andrew Bauer. His attorneys said she consented to being put in the hospital.
A bunch of rich pigs.

In 1915 the Indians were named in honor of Chief Sockalexis who is often identified as the first person of Native American ancestry to play in the National League and Major League Baseball.

Cleveland leads the nation in Drifters, and really missed a golden opportunity to celebrate that

I wonder of the Guardian Angels will sue.

Unbelievable.
This country has gone nuts, on both ends.

'In 1915 the Indians were named in honor of Chief Sockalexis who is often identified as the first person of Native American ancestry to play in the National League and Major League Baseball.'
It's true that Socklexis played for Cleveland and was the first Indian to play in the MLB and was a really good outfielder and hitter but he left the club under terrible/sad circumstances - he was an alcoholic and they essentially fired him. The other thing is is that he played with the club when they were in decline.
So it seems doubtful that the team was named after him in order to honor him, at least I can't find anything that says that's why they became the Indians. Not saying they didn't it just seems unlikely. Sockalexis died in 1913 so ... maybe
I guess they could use one of their old names - they used to be called the Spiders, that's the name they were using when Sockalexis played for them.
It's actually idiotic to change the name - Indians isn't a derogatory word or term, unlike redskin.
Plus I don't know anyone who refers to themselves or any other as 'Native American', we all call ourselves Indians.
This pc bullshit has really got to stop.

I salute the name change. Bravo, Cleveland.

Atticus_Finch,
I know Baseball History. I've read and heard several times that the Indians name came in honor of Louis "Chief" Sockalexis.
SABR The Society for American Baseball Research says this...
"Cleveland’s American League team (which began play in 1900) had been called the Naps in honor of playing manager Napoleon Lajoie, but when Lajoie left the team after the 1914 season, a new nickname was in order. In January 1915, team owner Charles Somers, after consulting with several local sportswriters, decided to revive the name that had defined the city’s National League club 18 years before. Somers, perhaps recalling the all-too-brief period of excitement that Louis Sockalexis had brought to Cleveland in 1897, dubbed his team the Indians, a name that remains to this day."
|
|
That doesn’t at all say they were honoring him, merely reviving the old name. It says that Somers “perhaps” recalled the excitement he brought. Conjecture on part of the writer.
That said, I think these silly issues like changing team names do more harm than good. Even reasonable people get tired of it.

Indians, Guardians, Steamers.... Team will still suck.
|
|
life , is simple....
humans complicated the hell out of it, so earth eradicated them....

The team that needs a name change is the Damn Yankees.
I am totally offended by that name. What is this world coming to when a team is named
Yankees

Cancel culture is going into "oh for fuck's sake" realm. Usually I'm like "sure change it; x will still be x"
I mean things change all the time as people go "Huh, yeah that really is kinda weird, let's correct that" but you know if you've grown up around it and it doesn't offend *you* then you're gonna be pissed.
Cancel culture struck years ago around my area with Halloween with all the idiot Christians who couldn't separate what the holiday became from it's origins. I mean I freakin' celebrate Christmas as a holiday not as a religion event but I don't get all triggered from it.
If you think about it; this stuff goes back further in being PC. Stupid stuff like taking the fat chick out of the Disney's Pirates of the Carribean because it offended fat people.
*sigh*
Also Damn Yankees. That band was... "ok"
Maybe we're just too damn old...

The should’ve named them Cleveland “BIPOCs”

New Guardians logo and info here

After the initial outrage is over Cleveland fans will buy new hats, jersys, etc... It's a win for the Indians, I mean the Guardians.

True but the name still sounds like a saturday morning cartoon.

With the Rock & Roll hall of fame in Cleveland how do you not change your name to the Rockers?
