I’m not sure if the US will ever get a true Dream Team anymore. I think US players have probably figured out that the International talents have significantly caught up to NBA, and there’s too much for our most elite players to lose to their branding and money if they don’t bring home the gold or if they get injured. Kinda sad. Look at our current “Dream Team” roster. It had Kevin Love at one point.

Let's get one thing straight - There has been only one 'Dream Team': The 1992 Olympic team. PERIOD!
That's it no other team after comes close to those players in any category.
Using the term for every olympic team is just idiotic!
THE Dream Team:
PF 4 Laettner, Christian 22 6 ft 11 in (2.11 m) 235 lb (107 kg) Duke Blue Devils
C 5 Robinson, David 26 7 ft 1 in (2.16 m) 235 lb (107 kg) San Antonio Spurs
C 6 Ewing, Patrick 29 7 ft 0 in (2.13 m) 240 lb (110 kg) New York Knicks
SF 7 Bird, Larry 35 6 ft 9 in (2.06 m) 220 lb (100 kg) Boston Celtics
SF 8 Pippen, Scottie 26 6 ft 8 in (2.03 m) 210 lb (95 kg) Chicago Bulls
SG 9 Jordan, Michael 29 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m) 198 lb (90 kg) Chicago Bulls
SG 10 Drexler, Clyde 30 6 ft 7 in (2.01 m) 222 lb (101 kg) Portland Trail Blazers
PF 11 Malone, Karl 28 6 ft 9 in (2.06 m) 256 lb (116 kg) Utah Jazz
PG 12 Stockton, John 30 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) 175 lb (79 kg) Utah Jazz
SF 13 Mullin, Chris 28 6 ft 7 in (2.01 m) 215 lb (98 kg) Golden State Warriors
PF 14 Barkley, Charles 29 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m) 250 lb (110 kg) Phoenix Suns
PG 15 Johnson, Magic 32 6 ft 9 in (2.06 m) 220 lb (100 kg) Los Angeles Lakers[64]

USA loses to France. What I saw: Durant, Dame Lillard, Kevin Booker throwing up careless bricks at the rim. No cohesion on offense (i.e., true jungle ball). When the best player USA had on the court was Jrue Holiday, you know the USA team is ripe for upset. Only its not an upset, France played better basketball and hit the crucial shots when they needed them.
Embarrasing.
That's my take. I wouldn't be surprised if Stephen A. has the same take.

^^ yes yes mr finch I agree.
should one expect the "healthiest" country to be on top? if so, 'murica', is not the healthiest . ..

I think Dream Team 2 wasn’t shabby either. It didn’t have the star power of DT1 (Jordan, Magic, Bird) but it was stacked with a diversified deep pool of great players. It had a good mix of elite point guards, shooting guards/forward cowards, and it had a stacked pure Big Centers (Shaq, Hakeem, and David Robinson). DT1 still top DT2 because I think all but Christian Latiner became NBA Hall of Fame players whereas DT2 might not have that distinction.
It’s sad what US basketball has become…essentially recruiting the best distance shooters in the hope of raining 3’s on opponents. It gets boring after a while and it’s streaky and boring as heck when the stars have a bad night and rain bricks instead. NBA has to bring more physicality back to the game. The days of Jordan, Shaq were exciting because fans love the posterizing dunks and great interior passing or drives to the bucket.
Besides , I think European and International developed the long ball game a lot earlier than NBA caught on so if Team USA is hoping to simply outshoot opponents, I think we re going to lose big. Look at all the elite European players, including the Bigs, they all have a soft touch shot with range (ie Jokic, Pau Gasol, Luca Doncic, etc) and they play defense. American basketball has become too soft with no hand-checking, rewarding fake flops, and refs calling fouls if defensive players breathe on offensive players too hard.

Also, nba teams over-reliance on sports analytics has f-cked up the game. The game is no longer a skills game but rather a statistically up most 3 pointer numbers game. Here’s a simple example:
A team that takes 100 shots and makes 33% of its 3-pointers (ie 33 shots x 3pts = 99 points) will beat a team that takes 100 shots and makes 49% (almost half) of its 2-pointers (ie 49 shots x 2 puts = 98 points). That’s the reason why you see so many nba teams raining 3’s even when they suck at it.
However, how shitty for fans be resigned to rooting for a 33% shooting team! I think it’s safe to say that most people would prefer to watch a 49% shooting team win than a 33% shooting team.

The issue is global expansion of the game over the years and the way the youth are being taught basketball in the USA.
You can argue the top starting 5 NBA foreign players can beat the top current NBA American born players.
Rudy Gobert
Nikola Jokic
Giannis Antentokoumpo
Luka Doncic
Dragic/Rubio
These players are just off the top of my head but you get my point. The last 3 years in a row NBA MVPs have been foreign players.
Even 2nd and 3rd tier foreign NBA players are killing our current USA team.
I heard an analyst mention the youth basketball programs in the USA teach 1 and 2 man basketball. Isolation play. One on one play and just shoot 3s.
Foreign countries still teach the traditional 5 man half court basketball, hence why the US team is struggling.
It can debated that the best overall players currently in the NBA are foreign born, so don't be surprised how the USA team is performing so far. Our.players are just not the best anymore.
