Stay near St Charles Avenue - Tulane University Area or the Mississippi River area --- where the nice Hotels are --- just west of the French Quarter ... Lots of great Jambalaya to be had in NOLA I think that Jambalaya kicks Gumbo's ass all day Tons of touristy things to do, tons to see, just a totally different culture --- influenced by the French and the fact that they are below sea level there ... Lots of awesome Mansions to look at on St Charles, and you have to take the Trolley too

Take the streetcar to the Garden District. Lots of old mansions there, as well as the above ground cemetery. Last time I was there, Magazine St. was the trendy area for shops and restaurants. Of course, you should spend a little time in the French Quarter, and earn some beads. If you are there at the beginning of March 2022, the Mardi Gras will be heating up.

Do a walking tour, many of them are free just need to tip the guide afterwards. Also Commander's palace has 75 cent martinis during lunch (precovid). Cafe Du Monde is worth a visit for a quick bite.

New Orleans is one of my favorite places. Can’t talk about current issues about crime.
Check the prices of the Q&C Hotel. Pretty reasonable but very nice and stylish boutique hotel for what you get in an nice area.
Bourbon Street is nice to walk through but Frenchmen Street is where you want to be for amazing music and bars.
Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop Bar, the oldest bar in the country from the early 1700’s, is my favorite bar at it’s fucking magical. Mostly lit by candles. It is at the end of Bourban Street as Frenchmen Street begins a couple streets over. The story is that pirates used to drink there and then race through the street and jump into the river surrounding the French Quarter swimming back to their ships to avoid being caught by the authorities. Drink at the piano which is lit by candlelight.
Must have a couple Beignets at Café du Monde.

Great food at Mother's in the Warehouse district near the Harrah's Casino. My favorite is the crawfish etouffee but the red beans & rice and fried chicken are gloreous.
The good bars in the Frernch Quarter are on Frenchman Street. Every bar has live music and there are like 20 of them in a three block area.
Bourbon Street bars suck but go to Laffitte's and get a drink -- the Hurricane in a bucket with freakin knock you out.
Go to Marie Laveau's House Of Voodoo. Crazy and fun.
Do a haunted crypt walking tour.
If you like live music hit The Maple Leaf Bar and/or ChiChie Wha Wha.
Maintain situational awareness and have fun. New Orleans is our kinda place.

I grew up down there. It's a shit hole. Stay in the city, as close to the French Quarter as possible. Don't do outs you have no fucking idea what will happen...REALLY unpredictable. Maybe stay in the Garden District, St. Charles should be good or someplace on Canal if you want to be closer to the Quarter. The food will be the best part of the trip. Gumbo and jambalaya suck, and you can never really be sure what's in it. Get some crawfish etouffee, it will quite possibly be the best thing you've ever eaten.
You haven't actually been to NO unless you get some beingets at Cafe Du Monde.
Hit the big spots like Antoine's, Trujague's, Commander's Palace, Galatoires, and Pat O'Briens.
Get a PoBoy at Johnny's. There's a praline place in the market I think it's called Laura's or Lucille's..someplace with an L. go there for death by sugar overdose. It'll make your mouth water.
The weather, humidity, and bugs are god awful this time of year. Air-conditioning is your best friend, that and access to a pool. Stay alert on Bourbon St, it's a magnet for shady mother fuckers. Don't get tricked into taking a "tour" of the Basin. If you're not hunting or fishing and have all of your teeth there's nothing there for you to see.
