Today in gloom: death star

Well, we now have a good idea what will happen when the sun attempts to kill us.

“An international team of astronomers flipped it again in 2018 and found that a planetary nebula is indeed the most likely Solar corpse.

The Sun is about 4.6 billion years old – gauged on the age of other objects in the Solar System that formed around the same time. Based on observations of other stars, astronomers predict it will reach the end of its life in about another 10 billion years.

There are other things that will happen along the way, of course. In about 5 billion years, the Sun is due to turn into a red giant. The core of the star will shrink, but its outer layers will expand out to the orbit of Mars, engulfing our planet in the process. If it's even still there.
One thing is certain: By that time, we most certainly won't be around. In fact, humanity only has about one billion years left unless we find a way off this rock. That's because the Sun is increasing in brightness by about 10 percent every billion years.”

What year will humans go extinct?
According to a 2020 study published in Scientific Reports, if deforestation and resource consumption continues at current rates they could culminate in a "catastrophic collapse in human population" and possibly "an irreversible collapse of our civilization" in the next 20 to 40 years.

It will happen, just probably not while we are on here as a species.

There's your cause of climate change, right fucking there!

I suspect that long prior to One Billion Years AD, Homo sapiens will have (1) evolved into Homo superior, (2) colonized enough exoplanets that what happens to Earth won't affect human survival, and possibly (3) developed technology required to move Earth to a more distant orbit.

If we're lucky, (4) uploading technology will be developed so that we can last long enough in uploaded form to witness (1)-(3).

Btw: anyone who's interested in events a billion years from now should look into the Numenera RPG.

Since this exploding sun thingy has been known for like 100 years, nothing to see here.

What is interesting is to study how the science changed from the Copernican system to Digges to Herschel to Hubble. 100 years ago, there were cogent arguments for a static universe vs. a dynamic expanding one until Hubble's work proved the latter.

Smart people on both sides and even a few who said "the science is settled", lol.

The science is never settled, otherwise it's not science.

Speaking of BOOM.....

Where do I buy a Numanera RPG?
The old Soviet RP-7's I'm getting from Army surplus only work about half the time.
Can't get anymore AT-4's or M-72 LAWS.

Anyway, hook a brutha up!

Dude: in this context, "RPG" = "Role Playing Game". It's like Dungeons and Dragons, except the setting is on Earth a billion years from now, after the rise and fall of multiple civilizations, aliens, technology indistinguishable from magic, etc.
