The Aussies signed Non-proliferation treaty NPT of Nuclear Weapons. So here is my question. If they purchased our nuclear tech to bring nuclear subs, who is building them? Who builds and operate the nuclear sub with a nuclear reactor inside of it?
A nuclear reactor for a SSN or SSBN is above weapons grade. So unless the Aussies quit the agreement, there is almost no chance that they can abide with the NPT.
And if they quit NPT, it gives every other nation in that region another reason to develop their own nukes. Like North Korea, Pakistan and India. Then every freaking nation will have nuclear capability.
Australia is a tiny nation with a big land mass. Its got about the same population as Canada with like 60000 military members. How in the world would they have the resources, manpower, reserves, and tech and most importantly budget to keep this thing going? It cost 90 billion to start, about another 100 billion to finish and another 200 billion to maintain for the rest of the half-life of these reactors and subs.
Additionally, are they going to carry conventional missiles or nuclear capable missiles? If they are conventional, what's the point of having a nuclear reactor in a sub? Even if they can travel far, where are they going to get food supplies and other supplies from if they are in a war? If they are nukes, no one in the world will allow it since it gives rise to Iran getting nukes. If you can, why can't Iran?
And they are so close to New Zealand which is a nuclear free nation. NZ bans all and everything nuclear, how is that going to work since the two are so close?
China deep down is probably ecstatic that Australia is spending all these monies on a useless thing. Aussie's military is too weak and small. Its nation's GDP is too small. South Korea's GDP is 25% more than Australia. Think about that for a second. And SK is directly next to NK, China and Russia and they don't have nuclear capable subs or missiles.
Its a stupid thing for Australia but a GREAT thing for USA and China. We can profit off the Aussies and use them as Cannon Fodder against China. China is currently pissed at the Aussies and they can't wait for the Aussies to spent a huge chunk of their reserves to build on something useless to their national projection. Which nation in the area would care for Australia's military? None. Even Indonesia is casting them aside.
The only true winner is USA. Bidumb did something smart for once for American's military industrial complex. 90 billion usd will create some jobs and taxable income. Australia gov't must be dumber than a rock. They are not high tech but commodity based nation focused on minerals and agriculture products. They have nothing high tech. Meaning everything they produce and sell are replaceable. Pissing off the biggest raw material and agricultural buyer in the world like China is suicidal.
