Angler.... here's some truth about the AR
the AR-15 was designed by Armalite under a defense contract by the US Army as a light weight highly effective assault rifle with a higher kill rate and ROF than the standard issue assault rifle of the time, the M-14, which is heavy, and proved unwieldy in jungle and close quarter environments.
The initial assault rifle design was the AR-10, but it didn't make the cut due to the poor durability of the barrels. The army moved on for a bit and used the M-14 as their standard issue assault rifle, although technically labeled by some as a "Battle Rifle".
After the kinks were worked out of the AR-10 design the new assault rifle was renamed the AR-15, and accepted by the US Army as the replacement for the M-14 Battle Rifle. Later variants were named the M-16 but all are built on the exact same platform to the exact same military specifications as the original AR-15 design....which was that of a light weight assault rifle with a high rate of fire. In fact the military's demand for parts interchangeability is exactly why the civilian version of the AR-15 can be changed over to the fully automatic military issue version.
These specific weapons are not designed for hunting or target shooting. These weapons are designed under military contract and built to military specifications for one purpose...killing people. The military does not commission weapons to be designed for hunting game, or the shooting of targets, they commission the design of assault weapons.
In short..Eugene Stoner was commissioned by the US military to design what became the AR-15.

It wasn't designed as a hunting rifle.
It wasn't designed for home protection.

The fact that the AR-15 has been down graded from it's original design to semi-auto in a civilian capacity means nothing as it was still originally designed as an assault rifle.

If you know somebody who is very depressed, or going through a bad divorce, or other life issue that has really got them down, maybe you should talk to them about whether they have a gun and whether they should really have that in their house right now.
Even good, strong people can have crises in their life, and it only takes a moment of hopelessness to pull a trigger. (Especially if you get good and drunk first, which many suicides do.)
The government obviously can't handle this shit with any conceivable combination of effectiveness and legality, so I guess it is really up to us, the responsible citizens, to look out for each other.
As a Veteran, I have known fellow Vets who were so messed up emotionally, they really had no business owning a gun. Yet they had never been involuntarily committed or been convicted of a felony, so it was legal. And a few of them have indeed committed suicide by gun. Very sad.

DUDE...... I'm at the VA all the fucking time and I see other Vets that should DEFINITELY NOT have access to firearms and weapons of ANY kind.
It pains me to say that about our brothers but it's the sad truth. God bless them for all they have sacrificed but some are a definite danger to themselves and society as a whole. Nobody....and I mean NOBODY is taking the proper steps to help these guys readjust to society and assimilate back into the regular world. And NOTHING is being done to take care of the ones who have been pushed too far and will just never come back.
And THAT is absolute bullshit.
Also...it's a sobering thought to know that some of the Vets that are in the most danger and the most well trained and proficient with their weapons.
It's like there is only a handful of people outside of Veterans themselves that want to face reality and actually talk about the situation.

1 - The hiring freeze.... you know who the hiring freeze effected? Veterans. THOUSANDS of Veterans were in the pipeline for good stable employment with the govt. and their various regulated contractors. ALL those jobs...gone. disappeared with the waive of a pen. In addition to the Veterans, it also effected the medical staff.....doctors, nurses, and therapists...not hiring any new ones
2 - Downsizing.... this relates to the hiring freeze... in addition to NOT hiring new staff, the decision was made NOT to replace doctors, nurses, and therapists that were rotating out of the system. People retire, people start families, people move... when these things happen those people are supposed to be replaced.... they weren't. Suddenly you are walking through the hospital and you are seeing abandoned offices...nothing but a desk a chair and empty file cabinets....
3 - Care cut backs... Well...you've had a hiring freeze...you've lost staff...CLEARLY you need to cut back on the level of care you provide. Appointments are harder to get...therapy clinics are now only open half the time......funny thing though...the number of Veterans didn't magically decrease..it fucking increased...because yeah, we've been in a fucking 20 year war the everyone had forgotten about.
4 - tRump is gonna "FIX" it.... bullshit
tRump...and the maralago syndicate...did NOT come up with that.
In 2014 Obama signed the Veteran's Choice act... What that did was if the VA system is overloaded, and you can't be seen within 90 days (which was kind of ridiculous) you have the option of either waiting for a VA appointment, or choosing to be seen by a VA contracted civilian healthcare provider in your area OR in an emergency you go to a local emergency room and the VA picks up the bill.
The system was simple.
It was easy
It worked pretty fucking flawlessly... I used it NUMEROUS times with ZERO problems.
tRump get's in the White House and can't fucking bear to live with ANYTHING Obama has done.... So he, his multi-millionaire maralago buddies and the rest of the GQP decide that the Veteran's Choice program has to be gotten rid of....BECAUSE WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU KEEP SOMETHING THAT WORKS IF A DEMOCRAT AND MORE IMPORTANTLY A BLACK DEMOCRAT DID IT.... So they scrap Veteran's Choice.....and replace it with "The Mission Act" which is almost exactly the same damn thing but worse. The only things that they really changed was they lowered the wait time to 30 days, and widened the options for providers....which on the outside sounds good....BUT.... NOW there is a shit load of extra red tape and hoops to jump through....suddenly there's this new insurance company to deal with... and the external providers are not interconnected and NOT coordinated with the VA.
Just as everything else from the tRump regime the dysfunction is designed into the system with the goal of ultimately making it fail.
To understand what is going on you have to understand the VA.
When a Vet is at the VA they are in the system. Within that system EVERYTHING is totally integrated. All providers have access to all your healthcare records and the different departments and therapists are connected seamlessly 24/7... within your region you can go to another VA facility and those providers are also connected and all working on the same page concerning your care. I get bounced back and forth from Sepulveda to WLA regularly and have been given the option of going to Long Beach if I want to make the drive. So those are at least 3 major facilities with seamless coordination. I'm not 100% sure but I've been told that the interconnected framework is on a national level....meaning that if for some reason I were in say Philadelphia...and I needed medical care...in theory I could go into the nearest VA and they could access all my records and health history just by swiping my ID card. I've never tested it, and I've heard that that capability is not national but regional. But in thinking through it, why wouldn't it be national? America has the tech to make that happen.

WHY do Veterans have so many problems? There are multiple reasons...a lot falling on the Veterans themselves. I love my Veteran brothers and sisters but the God's honest truth is that A LOT of them aren't very bright and almost ALL of them are STUBBORN AS FUCK. It's EXACTLY the same as when I was in uniform. Instead of learning the system, learning to USE the system, and learning to make the system work for you..... they just sit there like a bump on a log and claim it doesn't work. Just like when I was in the Navy....I learned to make the Navy work for me and how to bend and sometimes break rules to work in my favor without any consequences. LEARN THE FUCKING SYSTEM and how to work the system. I hear some people saying that some Veterans are cheating....they're not really cheating...maybe a few are...but the majority have learned the system and are using it to it's maximum capacity...THE WAY THEY SHOULD BE, because we've earned it. Another reason is that over the years there have been roadblocks set up in the system to keep it from functioning properly.... this is intentional.... do you know who set up those roadblocks? REPUBLICANS.... Why would they do that? because they want the VA to fail. Another reason is that it is overcrowded and underfunded. Perhaps the last reason is intentional mismanagement.... YOU don't want to hear this but blue state VAs are much better than red state VAs. This is because of regional management decisions. VAs in Arizona and Texas as well as the rest of the south are fucking horrible....Yet the Los Angeles system is one of the better in the nation and connected with the UCLA medical center....and in the last year of the Obama administration they expanded that connection and started sending UCLA doctors for rotations in the LA VA system. YES...my doctors at the VA are coming straight from UCLA now.
NOW...magically in 2017 after the hiring freeze went into place and there started to be staffing problems.....suddenly the doctor rotations were shorter...we started getting more NP's instead of DR's.. and the general QUALITY of these new NP's being rotated in was REMARKABLY lower. There was clearly a drop from when the program was started.... later to find out from my Veteran brothers that work at my VA, that the standards were dropped in 2017 and they started pulling from the bottom of the barrel. Even the long term staff was having problems with these low quality providers that were being rotated in. Which THANKFULLY I found out a few weeks ago that my low quality tRump doctor has been cut loose, and I'm finally getting a new primary this month.
NOW back to "the Mission Act" Since that piece of shit was instated I've attempted to use it 5 times....every time it has failed and I have gotten minimal care...or no fucking care at all. The providers aren't coordinated. I'm not sure they are even really working with the VA. They don't report back to the VA even if you are being farmed out to them and them back to your primary. You have to wait for the "mission act" insurance company to call you in order to start the process of setting up an appointment for community care. Under Veteran's Choice it took a couple of days... NOW it can take weeks if they bother to call you at all. When you call them...you get the run around...spend hours on the phone, only to be told that you are waiting for insurance company approval. And sometimes that insurance company approval NEVER FUCKING COMES!
Case in point at the end of April I contacted my shitty tRump primary Dr about blindingly intense shoulder pain that made it nearly impossible to function. She said to make an appt. I contacted my scheduler who I have a great relationship with and he told me appointments were 3 weeks out, but he worked some shit around and got me in in 6 days (this is why it's good to know the system and work the system) I go in the see stupid tRump bitch and she isn't even fucking concerned that a guy that has had previous spinal surgery and residual nerve damage is having incapacitating shoulder pain. I ask that this be farmed out to neurology and physical therapy cause I'm losing range of motion. She says she'll send me for another appointment....not saying where... and then sends my home with some kind of fucking glorified Advil...tells me I don't need MRI's or x-rays... 3 weeks later I finally get a call about scheduling another appointment....from the mission act people cause it is now may and my VA provider is booked solid through september (I don't have hook ups in every department) they are gong to send me out to a community provider... I contact that Dr.. appointment available 2 weeks out.. the 2nd week of June. I find out that instead of neurology and physical medicine...I'm being sent to pain management. Instead of trying to identify and correct the problem..tRump bitch just wants me on more medication. Civilian Dr says WTF?!?! You need MRI's to identify the problem and I can't treat you until we know what is wrong. Sends out for an MRI and want's me to come back. Now I wait.... and wait... NOW it is fucking August... Mission act has never called. I call them numerous times...there is nothing on file... I call civilian doctor... request was sent... call mission act repeatedly.. finally get a sympathetic woman who digs around and finds out that my MRI request is waiting for approval. Call back to a different woman that the sympathetic woman told me to call directly on a non-listed line a couple days later and she tells me the request has been approved.... BUT NOW THE DOCTOR NEEDS TO RESUBMIT A DIFFERENT REQUEST FORM TO ACTUALLY GET THE APPROVAL TO BE SENT TO A DIFFERENT CIVILIAN PROVIDER.... I call the Civ Dr... the office girls says they haven't been sent the packet with the other form. NOW they have to request the mission act insurance company for the form packet.... they finally get the form... which apparently has to be sent on paper as well as electronically... it is now September, all request forms have been submitted. I have canceled and rescheduled 4 appointments with Civ Dr while waiting for an MRI... there is no point in coming in without an MRI... continue calling the mission act people... no progress, no reply about scheduling an MRI. Apparently under the mission act once I am sent to outside care I can't be rotated back to the VA for treatment....where I can just walk in to radiology and either be seen THAT DAY or within 2 days.
It is NOW fucking October... the mission act has apparently lost me in the system... I'm still in pain.. have never received proper treatment..
This is the 3rd time this or something similar has happened to me with tRump's mission act.
NOW I'm receiving BILLS from civilian doctors..... The mission act insurance company is supposed to be handling this. My care at the VA is 100% covered..they pay for everything. I have to call the fucking mission act insurance to get those mother fuckers to pay their bills.
DELAY AND DON'T PAY......this fucking tactic sounds REALLY familiar.
Conversely when I went through Veterans Choice.
If the VA wasn't able to schedule in a timely manner. I would get bounced to Veteran's Choice and be contacted by a rep within 48 hours. An appointment would be scheduled with a contracted networked provider....generally within a 2 week window. I would be given a selection of local providers and their available appointment dates so I could choose which worked best for me. I would go to the appointment as usual. After the appointment was done the records would be submitted to the VA and uploaded to my medical file and I would be called to schedule a followup with my primary. If anything like a x-ray, or physical therapy or a specialist was needed I would be bounced back to the VA for immediate scheduling.... if the appointments there were full... repeat the scheduling cycle for a different Dr... all generally handled within 48 hours. All costs were submitted to and handled by the VA. NO OUTSIDE BILLING

When dealing with the VA... I'll use my broken foot as an example.. Call my scheduler..."YO I think I broke my foot" he says if I want to try a walk in he will see if he can squeeze me in, but no guarantee. Drive to VA get there around 9.. wait for a bit...I get squeezed in right before lunch... my pre tRump era primary Dr is also an ex Navy corpsman who deployed with the Marines. A top shelf Dr with years of experience who cuts into his lunch hour to help me out, has his nurse bring him a smoothie for lunch so he can check me out and schedule the proper consults. He sends me straight to radiology who in turn has me on an x-ray table within the hour right after everyone returns from lunch. Then I'm sent up to Ortho... gotta wait, but they squeeze me in at 3...they check my films which have been digitally uploaded to my files...do what they need to do... put me in an air boot... and then the Dr personally walks me over to the podiatrist, because they say they have no availability...but I get seen anyway for a few minutes at the end of the day...Podiatrist says everything is in order...I'll be following up with him.. and gives me a cushiony insole kind of thing to lessen the pain and make the boot more comfortable. Then downstairs to pick up my meds which have been pre submitted and are waiting for me to pick up before they close for the day... Everything integrated streamlined and coordinated. All done in 1 day in 1 building on 1 system. THAT is how it was working before tRump. NOW it's all fucking dysfunctional.
NOW.... I'm SURE that all of that is NOTHING you want to hear or even admit is real. And that probably goes against your belief system......but THAT is how it has been working in a first hand account from someone who is IN the system...NOT some fucking lying politician or bullshit news "personality"

How do republicans "solve" problems...they cut taxes defund any support systems and attempt to dismantle any government controls or agencies so they can boot you over to the private sector to leave you to figure it out on your own and deal with people who will help you if you can afford their price.
Which party was been talking about dismantling the VA and privatizing Veteran's healthcare for decades?
Which party HISTORICALLY has lead the budget cuts for the VA?
Which party has been pushing the narrative that the VA doesn't work and is a waste of time and resources so it needs to be eliminated....and then strangles it's budget and pushes layer upon layer of red tape so that it becomes SO dysfunctional that it is destined to fail.......achieving the goal of justifying it's elimination...AND it's goal of privatizing Veteran healthcare.
