"Is Donald Trump a fascist?

It’s a question I’ve tried to answer a few times in the six-odd years that he has dominated American politics. Back in 2015, no fascism expert would use the word to describe Trump. In October 2020, they were inching closer, but most dismissed the term as likely an exaggeration or distraction.

The assault on the US Capitol on January 6 has changed matters significantly. Robert Paxton, a Columbia University historian of fascism and Vichy France, wrote after the attack, 'I have been reluctant to use the F word for Trumpism, but yesterday’s use of violence against democratic institutions crosses the red line.'

Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a historian at NYU and author of Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present, told me in October that she preferred the term 'authoritarian' to 'fascist' in describing Trump. This past week, though, Ben-Ghiat took to Twitter to draw parallels between the Capitol siege and Mussolini’s 1922 March on Rome, and between Republicans now turning on Trump to Italian fascists who voted Mussolini out of power in 1943, not to reinstate democracy but to save fascism.

They are hardly alone in the sense that some important line was crossed when Trump supporters, at his urging, stormed the Capitol, leaving over 50 police officers injured and two dead, and leaving four rioters dead as well.

Not everyone is on board with the label. Sheri Berman, a professor of political science at Barnard College and an expert on European politics in the 1930s, told me on Tuesday, 'I saw Paxton’s essay and of course respect him as an eminent scholar of fascism. But I can’t agree with him on the fascism label.' When I asked Matthew Feldman, director of the Centre for Analysis of the Radical Right, if he agreed with Paxton, he replied, 'No. I still think less Mussolini than Berlusconi (and people forget his 1994 cabinet was made up of a majority of radical right ministers).'"

The undermining of the peaceful transfer of power in democracy, culminating with inspiring the January 6th riot with a purpose to undermine the Electoral College count is definitely something an authoritarian figure would do.

I guess we have a permanent divide

half the people think trump is racist, half think he belongs in jail, half think he's responsible for 100 percent of covid deaths...pretty sure the ones where biden is presiding also

can an article by dylan be objective on a trump?

There is no bigger fascist than a Progressive
None
Nada
Zilch
Zero

Let's put it this way
Stalin would be blushing
Hitler embarrassed
Mao a piker

They know what's best for you
And will give it to you good and hard
Its essentially political rape
Used to be religious Repubs I most feared
No longer, they're a weak joke next to a Prog

Best use for a Prog?
Mulch

Stalin killed 20 million of his own people. Hitler killed 6 million Jews as a side project while trying to conquer the world. Mao Zedong’s Great Leap Forward between 1958 and 1962 killed 45 million of his own people. Bernie and AOC want 12 weeks of paid leave after giving birth to a child. I see your point. Well said. Well done. Jesus would be proud of you.

It's interesting that NR only points to the Capitol riot on Jan 6th as something Trump is
responsible for, while there the seems to be plenty of evidence that the FBI was involved
with the riot without Trump's knowledge. Merrick Garland refused to answer any questions
regarding the FBI's involvement and refused to answer questions about individuals
who may have been working for the FBI while participating in the riot.

There are many who didn't like Trump but at least Trump had a good economy, high employment
and energy independence.

What do we have under Biden? The opposite, but it's not Biden's fault, it's our fault. LMAO
Biden is AWESOME! He's blaming us and we should be grateful that we have to settle for less.
Americans are bunch of ingrates.
More misery to come!

@Hey

They are just getting started.

Take over of healthcare system and other institutions that then GOVERN your life.

It starts off slowly and then moves quickly.

All you have to do is look at Australia. Imprison people for just LEAVING their own home.

The news media has displayed COUNTLESS examples there.....FASCIST. Yes.

To the LARGER point. Its humorous to say that the right or conservatives are fascist.

It defies logic. Why?

Conservatives believe in the principles of the Constitution. Freedom of speech....Individual Rights....etc.

Soooo by YOUR logic if a Conservative moves further to the right....then they believe in MORE FREEDOMS.....MORE INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS.......

Which is quite contrary for fascism. Fascism takes away rights....takes away free speech.

So by definition Conservatives can NEVER be fascist.

The left on the other hand....YUP.

Left believes the whole is more important than the individual.....which Conservatives believe the individual is just as important than the whole.

Thats why the left has NOOOOO problem with collateral damage of taking out people....even their own once their value to them is gone.

Conservatives by definition....can never be fascist.

Let that sink in.....

for those who dont know what fascism is and when its in your face:

"Words have meaning. When I called Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump a fascist in a recent article for War Is Boring, I meant it. I did not mean “dictatorial,” though he is. I did not mean “authoritarian,” though he is. I meant fascist — a practitioner of virulent and horrifying ideology that poisons everything it touches."

"Trump’s fascism is new. It’s a reality-T.V. kind of fascism. Uniquely American, born to entertain and fed by the internet. Trump is its prophet."

by the way, i have given examples of 45 being just that in other posts, but it is funny how there are still request for examples.......short term memory loss or just remembering what they want to remember?

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

Donald's campaign slogan was "Make America Great Again." His campaign was built on the promise that his America will be the greatest nation the world has ever seen. As Sinclair Lewis put it in the 1930s, "When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag, sing the national anthem, carry a cross, and be called 'Americanism.'" Also, the issues stated on the Whitehouse.gov website begin with either "America First" or resemble his campaign slogan. Comparatively, President Obama's issues were neutrally named, simply calling them what they are like Climate Change, LGBTQ, Economy, Civil Rights, etc.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights
Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

Donald has also been open about bringing back the use of torture on suspected terrorists.
"[Waterboarding] works. It works. If it doesn't work, they deserved it anyway," he's quoted. As I mentioned above, he has censored government agencies from posting on social media, a blatant violation of the 1st amendment. So now agencies like NASA, NPS, EPA, and USDA have gone rogue, creating alternate Twitter accounts to continue spreading knowledge that Donald wants to censor, like climate change for example.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial, ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

Donald Trump has made sure the world knows he doesn't like anyone who isn't a straight, white, cisgender, able-bodied male. His claims that Muslims are terrorists (despite the fact that the overwhelming majority hate terrorism) has bolstered his efforts in banning their immigration to the United States. Donald is creating the notion that immigrants are the enemy, they are why the US is failing (even though the US is a country made by immigrants). Donald sounds scarily similar to a certain someone in 1939 Germany.

4. Supremacy of the Military
Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

Donald Trump has instituted a freeze on the hiring of all federal workers, except the military. They are allowed to be as large as they want. According to the Making Our Military Strong Again page on Whitehouse.gov, the Trump administration wants to ensure that America will be at the highest level of military readiness.

5. Rampant Sexism
The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy.

Donald Trump's blatant sexism is one reason why the Women's March on Washington happened January 21st. During his campaign, Donald has said many vile things regarding women, most famously saying "Grab them by the p*ssy". He considers women to be below him, saying that "all women on The Apprentice flirted with me--consciously or unconsciously."

At the time this article was written, on January 27, the March for Life took place in Washington, D.C. March for Life is a huge pro-life demonstration and was attended by Mike Pence, who was quoted, "Life is winning." The March ended at the steps of the Supreme Court, which is significant because Donald's supreme court pick is sure to be someone extremely conservative. The administration has made it known that the wish to refund Planned Parenthood, which would prove disastrous for those who rely on their services, mostly women, because PP does more than provide abortions, the give birth control, sex education, hormone replacement therapy, men's sexual health services and so much more. Millions of low-income people will be without reproductive health care if Planned Parenthood gets defunded.

Not only that, Donald wants to repeal marriage equality, which on June 25, 2015, marked a huge step forward in American civil liberties. Millions of same-sex couples will lose their right to marry if this happens.

6. Controlled Mass Media
Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

Donald Trump claims the media is unfairly biased against him. He has said the media is the enemy. Now he has made it so that outright lies are just "alternative facts" and that any data from the EPA must be submitted for "approval". Meaning since Donald is a climate-change denier, any life-as-we-know-it altering findings could be denied approval for publication. Not only is this level of censorship scary from a 1st amendment standpoint, it's scary period. A top presidential aide has also told the New York Times that the press should "keep its mouth shut" to which CNN news anchor Jake Tapper responded, "No."

oh wow! look at #14!!!!!

7. Obsession with National Security
Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

Donald Trump uses the fear of terrorism in order to get support for his highly unconstitutional ban on Muslims, whether US nationals or not, from entering the country. His campaign was run using peoples' fear of the "other"-- immigrants, Muslims, black people, Latinx, LGBT, poor people, etc-- by saying that we are the cause of America's downfall.

8. Religion and Government are Intertwined
Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

The separation of Church and State is one of the most important aspects of our nation's policies. However, with a GOP-led Congress it will be much easier for religion to interfere with legislature.

9. Corporate Power is Protected
The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

Let's get one thing straight: Donald Trump has no place in politics. If that isn't clear by now, I spelled it out for you. He is a business man, or as much as a businessman someone who filed for bankruptcy four times can be. Which means that he wants to protect his business in order to line his pockets. Donald Trump has allowed the Dakota Access Pipeline to be built. The problem? The pipeline will run through Native American lands, which violates the federal treaties stating that Native lands are their own sovereign countries. Presidents are required by law to honor the treaties, so not only is this illegal, it has huge environmental repercussions as any leak in the pipeline will pollute the water in the Standing Rock reservation and the water of 17 million Americans downstream. "Donald Trump has put corporate interests ahead of American interests," says the president of NextGen Climate Tom Steyer.

10. Labor Power is Suppressed
Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely or are severely suppressed.

11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts
Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.

Donald has cut funds for the National Endowment for the Arts and National Endowment for the Humanities, meaning that things like PBS and NPR, as well as smaller educational outreaches across the country will lose valuable grant money. As a musician, this one hits me hard as I have dedicated my entire life to music and performing arts. Many of my friends are left wondering will our degrees in the Arts and humanities mean anything? What will become of academics who speak out against Donald Trump?

12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment
Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

Donald Trump wants his administration to be known for "law and order." He has threatened to send federal officers to Chicago, to combat violent crime, which is a violation of the 10th Amendment. The 10th Amendment states that all other powers belong to the States or to the people, with congress being permitted to regulate commerce between the States. This is why Donald simply cannot "send in the Feds" to deal with a local issue.

13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption
Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

Donald Trump's staff and cabinet have some interesting people including his own son-in-law as his senior advisor, a literal neo-nazi, an ironically uneducated Department of Education nominee, and a neurosurgeon for the department of housing and urban development, just to name a few incompetent people.

14. Fraudulent Elections
Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

Donald Trump claims over 3 million people voted illegally. The only reason he says this is because he lost the popular vote, of course, to Hillary Clinton, and he just can't stand losing. The New York Times reported that Donald Trump told the story of golfer Bernhard Langer. The story goes that Langer was in line to vote at a polling station when he was told he wouldn't be able to because he is not a US citizen. Langer is a German citizen, with permanent residency in the US. "Ahead of and behind Mr. Langer were voters who did not look as if they should be allowed to vote, Mr. Trump said, according to the staff members — but they were nonetheless permitted to cast provisional ballots. The president threw out the names of Latin American countries that the voters might have come from." So a white guy saw some brown people at a polling and immediately assumed that they are illegal immigrants voting illegally? It's not like Latin-Americans can be US citizens, amirite? Nevertheless, Speaker Paul Ryan has launched an investigation based on nothing but hearsay.

I think its somewhat of a mistake to get caught up in semantics and literal definition of terminology to describe someone's politics.

It's pretty clear as day that Trump had good policies, a good economy, energy independence, and was securing the border.

It's also clear as day that when the Progressives came into power the puppet Biden completely screwed up everything good Trump did.

Jan 6th?... Its this years Russia Collusion. yeah the FBI already said there was no coordinated right wing conspiracy. Theres more than enough evidence those people where let in to browse around.

You guys want to keep drinking the Koolaid that Trump planned that .

When you can burn, loot, riot in cities across America and be bailed out by Kamala Harris but parents are labeled as domestic terrorists at board meetings...

The world has gone mad.

The left has no intent to support thing called Democracy and Freedom

of course you think like this. i gave clear cut examples of how 45 is a baby dictator. your response is pure opinion and shows no evidence that his policies were "good". the boarder?? come on.
when have the progressives come into power?? the dems are killing anything in the new bills that even resemble a progressive agenda. immigration and climate policies are dying.

No you did not I could go down everyone of your points and say BS.

Let me just take ONE. Your examples are BASELESS.

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

Nationalism binds us together as a country. Its HOW you use power defines fascists.

I could have a swastika as a political symbol but believe in Capitalism....which Hitler did not.

Songs....huh....did you forget about

"MMM Barack Hussein Obama...."

And what the hell is wrong with our National Flag.....FFS.

It is what binds our citizens together.

Nationalism is not bad.....people who use power like Biden & Obama are. Biden is defying a court decision regarding illegals right NOW. And yet...crickets from you. Now THAT is an example.

You really hate this country so much don't you.....well you are free to leave ANY TIME.

Take Trump out of it. The past full year under puppet Biden is complete and utter disaster. We have to explain that?... are you blind, deaf, and stupid?

Who's in charge right now?.. we know it's not Joe but whoever it is they dont like this country and Obama & the Clintons dont act like anything's wrong with the F'd up incompetence in the WH right now.

Yes this country was in far better hands over a year ago but the liberal MSM worked round the clock to hide that fact.

Trump is not the POTUS anymore, so why keep pointing out the things
many Lib/Dems didn't like about him.

Let's hear your support for Biden and how he's going to fix things.
So far he seems to be losing and I keep wondering how long
will he be able to function as POTUS.

Anyone here, actually believe he will be able to physically function
as POTUS for the next 3 years?
The way things are going, in another year, this country will be totally
messed up and you won't be able to blame it on Republicans.

i do find it funny how, all of the sudden we are supposed to drop 45 and his dismantling of our government. he just paved the way for another person, just as evil and def smarter. thats when the real tyrant will take hold. breaking down the gov and splitting the country's political views is part of it, which is why my link is so important. this is just the beginning.

"Nationalism binds us together as a country. Its HOW you use power defines fascists."
waterhead (yeah i like that one), do you even know how dangerous your statement is?? how ignorant you sound?? nationalism is the root of bigotry and racism, not to mention the start of hate. it states that if you are not of this country, you are crap. it one of the foundations of fascism. i see patriotism the same way and that reminds me of what Emma Goldman said about it:

"Indeed, conceit, arrogance and egotism are the essentials of patriotism. Let me illustrate. Patriotism assumes that our globe is divided into little spots, each one surrounded by an iron gate. Those who have had the fortune of being born on some particular spot consider themselves nobler, better, grander, more intelligent than those living beings inhabiting any other spot. It is, therefore, the duty of everyone living on that chosen spot to fight, kill and die in the attempt to impose his superiority upon all the others. The inhabitants of the other spots reason in like manner, of course, with the result that from early infancy the mind of the child is provided with blood-curdling stories about the Germans, the French, the Italians, Russians, etc. When the child has reached manhood he is thoroughly saturated with the belief that he is chosen by the Lord himself to defend his country against the attack or invasion of any foreigner. It is for that purpose that we are clamoring for a greater army and navy, more battleships and ammunition..." - Emma Goldman 1908

Trump did not dismantle the Govt...

He had the best real working policies.

What Biden and his puppeteers are doing to this country is a disaster. It's a nonstop shitshow day after day.

as i said before, its your opinion. one man's pile of crap is another's pile of gold. he had disastrous policies and he made us the joke of the world. he did have a chance to redeem himself with the pandemic response, but choked that too. problem is when he choked it, people died. so i have been giving examples, where are you claims from? proof?

"he had disastrous policies and he made us the joke of the world."

Ok so what do you not understand about a great pre COVID economy, totally secure southern border, and world leaders respected Trump. Biden has fucked up everything he touches and Afghanistan alone has world leaders everywhere wondering what is suddenly going on in the US. That comes from Gen Milley in Congressional testimony.

"he did have a chance to redeem himself with the pandemic response, but choked that too. problem is when he choked it, people died. "

He gave Biden the vaccines that Democrats first swore they wouldn't touch. Since the vaccine rollout... more people have died of COVID under Biden than last year. But apparently COVID deaths are only attributable to a GOP President.

so i have been giving examples, where are you claims from? proof?

Proof?... Biden and his administration is a joke which updates incompetence and stoopid on a daily basis.

Look at the border, Afghanistan debacle, canceling Keystone then begging foreign suppliers for more oil, biden is the laughingstock on the world stage right now...

There's a distinct reason people are chanting "let's go Brandon " at sporting events every weekend.

“ Trump had the Best real working government? “

Blatantly stupid, inept, and overridden in the courts for being unconstitutional.

Oh, and why is Trump still fair game? Because more and more of his actions are being revealed as his notes and records are being shown tonCongress, and the scope of his illegal activities and his direct involvement is being revealed.
He has not out run the clock.

New team, new clock
It's called "Biden time" now

And, it sucks as bad as Trump time.........or worse
Don't even get me started on Harris, what a joke
Even the Dems don't like her and are sidelining Cackles
Didn't think it possible to go from bad to worse
But, here we are.........

I’ll admit Biden keeps stepping in it, and the Dems don’t have their act together.

But it is a far cry better than the “natiolism” that the country was headed under Trump.

Natiolism? WTF is that?

Trump is a demagogic populist, nationalism is just a robe he wears when he needs it.
Almost everything he does is part of the "reality show" he inhabits
Narcissists like Trump are born, not made.
And, you can't unmake a narcissist.

For example, consistently during his political career, Trump has favored protective tariffs.
Economically unsound as they may be, tariffs play on his stage as "protecting the little people".
Right Wing populism, not in its effect, but in how it appears to your average 100 IQ American voter.

This shit ain't rocket science.
Best thing that could happen?
Trump has a heart attack and Biden goes to memory care.
We start with a blank slate in 2024.

In the meantime, no matter how many times you post it, Gloomy.
Trump's day is over for now and Biden is the bitch.
Please tell me one thing, just one....that Joe has improved as his numbers sink into the 30's.

More people have died from Covid in 2022 than 2021.
Since Joe got sworn in back in January, he now holds that record.
It was the ONE thing he promised to fix.
He hasn't and everything else he's touched has turned to shit.

Like I said, not rocket science.

@Boobs

nationalism is the root of bigotry and racism, not to mention the start of hate. it states that if you are not of this country, you are crap. it one of the foundations of fascism. i see patriotism the same way and that reminds me of what Emma Goldman said about it:

Far from it. Nationalism is putting YOUR country FIRST....SECOND.....& Third. And that is what politicians of every country should do for their own country.

You have a warped definition of Nationalism. Yours is more in line with Communism or better yet Globalism. Sorry pal....I only care about America's interests. I have seen how the Globalists work and the endless wars waged.....and American blood spilled only to leave and let those we wanted dead back in charge.

Its USA first.....2nd & 3rd. PERIOD.

And btw....I do believe in helping others. CITIZENS of the US give MORE money to help those around the world vs all others in the world combined.

And how did that come to pass....its called Capitalism.
