It makes me miss being in Costa Rica. Could get an empanada for like $2 and they were always made fresh

The Empanada Maker in Mission Viejo, off I-5 at La Paz is a great rest stop.
Sometimes on Groupon.
They now have an Irvine and Costa Mesa location.
And the Pasty Kitchen in Los Alamitos (mentioned earlier) is also a treat.

That place is the bomb.
Every one of them is unique and delicious and made to order.
Don't even need the sauces.
Great place to pick up some quick carbs - in case you are going to need some energy!!!
FYI - The Pizza is reasonably priced and the bomb!!!
