Last year I bought a friend turkey for Thanksgiving dinner. It was the best bird I ever tasted. I had to order another one this year. I am anticipating Thanksgiving.
Fried Turkey is great. Almost as good a smoking one, but a lot easier.
The key is to make sure you don’t over fill the oil. That’s one of the main causes of having it overflow and starting an oil fire. One trick is to put the Turkey in the pot you plan to use and fill it with water to just above the turkey. Then pull the turkey out and mark the level of the water. That’s your fill line for the oil.
Also, make absolutely certain that it is thawed. Dropping a frozen bird in the hot oil can cause a serious and violent reaction.
There’s only one unitasker in my kitchen and that’s a fire extinguisher. If you’re frying a Turkey, it’s a very good idea to have several placed around the cooking area. And do it outside on flat ground.
The only thing that I personally cook for Thanksgiving is collard greens. I make a large pot and they go fast. The turkey I ordered from a soul food restaurant in Hawthorne. The food there is good but fairly expensive. I leave home at 07:00 A.M. to do an 08:00 A.M. pickup so I can enjoy the drive and savor my coffee.
I agree with Lamar on the collard greens! That’s my number one go to as soon as I walk in my grandma kitchen lol.. can’t forget the candied yams with the baked mac mmm… can’t wait 😛
