Mission Valley is pretty central and has a lot of hotels. In that area the Fashion Valley Doubletree, the Sheraton and the Hilton don't require card access to the elevators and there are many other lower end type hotels too. Lots of restaurants in that area and Old Town, a touristy zone with lots of Mexican restaurants, is 10 minutes away.
Downtown San Diego has a variety of hotels but usually parking sucks.

Stay away from Hotel Circle.

Depends on where you are staying for food & weather. Beach areas, PB, Mission Beach have good hole in the wall joints for food. Good Mexican, burgers, pizza, & Greek down that way..& lots of bars..while La Jolla, Del Mar is going to be more on the fine dining end. Both stay overcast much of the morning till about 11-12pm. Carlsbad seems to be a pretty popular working area as well as Mission Valley.

Coronado Island is beautiful!

Look for a place called the Grass Skirt in La Jolla, it's a Speak easy , no front door and you have to know the way in. Hint, it's next door.
