I was at his safe house in Southern California where he was hiding out from the Mexican’s that wanted to ransom his fortune (and the IRS who wanted payment for money earned in the US.)
I knew I would be doing a “transport job” for someone who wanted to remain low key and discrete, but I practically wet myself when he walked in from the kitchen. I thought he was a gardener getting some water before heading back outside, and then I saw the mustache. That such a calm man had such a booming voice.
And you do not make requests from a guy on the same level of “audience command” like classic Sinatra. You let him sing whatever the fuck he wants to.

When I met him in the 80’s he was already old and tired. It’s just when he gets on stage he reinvigorates, and all those aches and pains go away.
