The migration away from California is likely those who retired, sold their homes in California for way more than what they paid for it, and are going to cheaper states where they can live off of the equity that they made in California.
There is a 200,000 house shortage in Los Angeles alone. Until new homes are built to accommodate the demand, prices will continue to rise.
I believe Los Angeles is now ranked the # 1 city in the world to invest in real estate (in some polls).
If California were undesirable, property values would be decreasing (not increasing) because demand would be dropping. Maybe you guys should be taking some courses in economics and logic. Home prices will eventually pull back a bit because of rising interest rates, but because there is a shortage of homes in LA, LA will bounce back very quickly if it drops at all.
So please, continue to twist facts to suit your political narrative. No one is buying it.

The comparison is not binary, California is not undesirable, but it is much less desirable than historically. People migrating to California are upper income, while those exiting are lower, middle income and without a college degree along with retirees. For the first time in history, there has been a net loss of people in the State and this is not going to change anytime soon.
So what is the implication of all this? Much of this points to California looking like a 3rd world country where there is a small middle class (by California standards) and lots of lower income and a good life for upper class who rely on the underclass with cities riddled with homeless, slums, crime, while upper class isolate themselves behind gated communities or geographically.

Total now stands at 331.8mil
Delayed pregnancies & curtailed immigration
And, let's not forget about 800,000 deaths (not sure how much of that is excess given that about 1.1mil die every year anyway)

The takeaway?
The whole country shows no pop growth, just reshuffling from CA to other states along with the other top 9 states losing pop to other states. Without 2m legal immigrants per year coming in, we are fucked in the long run as productivity CANNOT make up for a declining pop. This will effect demand for housing and all other consumer goods as time goes on.......and let's not forget anthropomorphic climate change.
As an aside, you CANNOT cut your way to nirvana vis a vis greenhouse gases. What's in the system is there for the long term and there's no way that the big polluters China/India will be actually slowing much less cutting their emissions. CA leading the way on this issue for 15 years has achieved absolutely nothing in terms of impact on climate change, other than to beggar the State and have disparate impact on the poor/middle class.

CA's idea of leading is to make a product/service more expensive IN the State( I guess to drive poor people out of the State), and buy what they need from other States that aren't stupid fucking utopians on a mission to signal their virtue to the world?
The coastal elite are just fine with crushing everybody in the Central Valley as they destroy their jobs.

IMO California's income and sales taxes suck because of our incredibly regressive property tax, which has all sorts of negative effects, from warping the housing market creating problems funding schools. Texas is better if you don't own a home, but if you own a home you're paying 1.8% annually in property tax and it's getting reassessed every year. Supposedly the 2022 reassessment is going to increase people's property tax bills by 10-15%. California is at 1% and the reassessment is capped at a rate way below inflation, and that tax basis carries over to your heirs if you pass it down after you die. Now, this sucks if you buy an overpriced home in today's market, because 1% of a lot is still a lot, but part of the reason the housing market is so warped is because people with inherited properties have zero incentive to sell because of their tax basis.
Wacko abortion policies aside, I think Texas is a pretty good place to live - weather's decent, diverse industries available, and plenty of access to nice things. And the tax bill is probably lower there. If it weren't for the abortion policies, I'd consider moving out. But it's not all sunshine there financially, especially if you own a house.

This is a BIG winner to me. Less backwards people in California means:
- Less pollution
- Less Covid spread
- Less NIMBYism
- Higher property values
- Less school shootings
- Less people who think the way to get rid of crime is to profile and harass people on the streets, massage parlors, hotel customers, etc.
- Less people getting in the way of scientific research (e.g. stem cell, social, etc.)
- Less people harassing our educators and hospitals over masks
