I think these big media tech companies are leveraging this opportunity to discourage legislation that make tech companies liable for users’ crazy rants. There’s been much talk about this being an issue that big tech want protection from. This knee jerk reaction to censor even the President is big tech’s way of saying, if we aren’t legally protected from lawsuits for stupid members’ potentially rebel rousing remarks, then censorship is the alternative.

I think in the long run this “censorship” or “banning hate speech” will be a good thing because it ll for our free society to answer questions that are way overdue:
1. Who is responsible for potentially hate speech or content...the tech platform or the poster of the content?
2. How to and who’s responsible for fact-checking content? It’s like everything is fake news or alternative facts depending on which side you’re on.
3. How does society hold individual users accountable if they post harmful content?
4. How do we draw the line between Freedom of Speech, satire, and hate speech?
5. In the event that speech in America becomes more fragmented, such as Conservatives flock to Parler and Liberals stick w Twitter, does govt still go after groups who exchange hate speech on one platform even though no one is offended by it because they all share similar views by using same either pro-conservative or pro-liberal platform?
In the past, the media platform , such as newspapers, TV, radio, and magazines, could logically be held accountable for the content because they had editors and their writers were responsible for fact checking own content.
However, in today’s world, everyone can post content with zero fact checking and no standard wrt use of inflammatory language. Hence, how do you hold big tech responsible; yet at the same time, what are the consequences if you don’t force big tech to find a way because they’re making billions of dollars off their platforms!
I suspect AI monitoring everyone’s post will be a big part of the answer but many will say that programming AI to be Big Brother monitoring free speech 24-7.
