They’re only opening the door to being able to be impeached when they’re out of office. There's an argument to be made to not have the Senate trial. He's gone, and quite honestly it's a tall order for the Dems to find 17 Republicans to convict. The trial could end up making Trump stronger if he wins and looks like a martyr. He's unpopular right now. Let him go and start with your agenda.
The exception would be if during the investigation, they find a lot more damning evidence against him. Then have the trial after Biden's first 100 days.

The reality is that 8 weeks ago, he got 75 million votes! He got more black and latino votes than any Republican in 60 years! But for mail in voting, Trump would have won this election going away, and that's a fact not even a liberal can dispute.

If the Dems and GOP convict Trump in the Senate, that prevents him from running for office in the future and essentially neutralizes much of the damage he can do to the Republicans. If they don’t convict and Trump is allowed to create the Patriot Party, that would splinter the GOP and the Dems will essentially be the only viable political party with significant voter number advantage.
But Dems are “dumb fuck feelers,” as @GBD said. Democrats act on principle, not simply what is good for the party but what is good for the country. @ISOS said that there is much “hate” with Democrats for Trump, but no one was more vile, more selfish, more divisive, and more hateful than Trump. He needs to be punished to the fullest extent of the laws he broke and he needs to be barred from ever running again.
That is the right thing to do even if it isn’t the best thing for the Democrats.
I am looking forward to limiting my viewing of cable news by feeling secure that the dumpster fire shitshow presidency is over and that America will regain its prominence and democracy will be restored. And that the health and safety of Americans will be safeguarded by a president who will take Covid (and science in general) seriously.
It would be nice to focus more on pussy than politics.

Rumor is that McConnell called Biden and said "tell Nancy to impeach the fucking asshole and we will convict him in the Senate". Trump was told this on Saturday which is why he didn't pardon himself or his accomplices since it would have been an admission of guilt.
Will impeachment and a Senate trial make Trump a martyr? I don't think the Dems or a sizeable chunk of Republicans give a fuck. The deplorables (Trumps real base) are sticking with Trump no matter what and Trump lost the remainder of the Republicans and independents when he urged the Storm Troopers and other fascists to seize the Capitol. ***Trump (and others) promoted a lie they knew was a lie and told believers to 'stop the steal'.
***People died and our government was materially stopped (temporarily) from its function.
***The VP, Speaker and Senate Majority Leader were in danger of death.
***Trump did nothing to help save the government until his own aides practically held him down and made him call in the Guard.
Somebody has to be held responsible for this shit, so Trump is it, as the head liar and inciter.
That is what the impeachment is about.
A hopeful side bonus is getting him barred from ever running again.
