Well it is cold as hell in texas today and will be through monday! 30 right now, 12:00 noon, and only supposed to get to 34 by 4:00 pm.
Supposed to snow on monday - 27 all day
Thankfully I'll be coming home in a couple of weeks but I won't miss this cold front.

You can't see black ice when you're standing on it but you can feel how slippery it is. My experience was in a curve at 60 MPH, I slid off the road into a field with several other motorist.

When I was living in New Jersey one of my friends almost killed us coming back from dinner because of black ice. It was the most craziest scariest experience I've ever had.

Grew up in that area.
I was young & stupid - I would go out and practice in empty lots when the rain/snow froze.
Best thing is just to stay off the damn road - you can control your car - but you need a LOT of room to slow - you can't break normally on the stuff.
And I didn't have auto lock breaks.

Black ice: First trip to Boston and Connecticut, black ice on a road heading towards a bridge, and got through it okay until we started going uphill, and traction never took and we started sliding back down and veering to the side. That “time slows down” when it looks like shit is gonna hit the fan?
Yeah, very real.
I do not envy anyone in the “no power/no heat” zone across the Midwest. I have friends who are about to run out of juice on their mobile devices and sleeping in the closet with all of the clothes because the rest of their homes are unbearable.

The asphalt is black and you're correct the ice is transparent so even though the ice is there all you see is the black asphalt. Black ice gets its name from its ability to blend in with its surroundings.
