If you are athletically inclined with good hand eye coordination, then it should not take long to start enjoying the game. And just like everything else, the more you play, the better you will get. And if you can find someone who is slightly better than you to play with, you will improve faster.

SBsurf nailed it.
Newbies: focus on racket back, good foot work, eye on contact with the ball.
With practice you can become an intermediate right there

^^^ not racquet back, but shoulder turn instead!

One of the most difficult things in tennis is having got tell your parents that you are gay now because you like tennis.

You need to have above average proprioception to play at all. If you played baseball or any other racket sport it is fairly easy to become competent. If you want to play at any level above " hit and giggle", you will need at least 1000 hours of play. If you want to play competitively the general rule is 10,000 hrs.
I played second singles and first doubles in college. I was total deal against any well coached amateur or any pro under 70.

I won a couple of US Opens pre 1968, when it was just us amateurs.
Best advice I can give you is to join a club that's got hot bitches
You'll thank me later
Good hunting
