Hawking radiation does not come from nothing, as even in empty space, subatomic "virtual" particles and antiparticles come briefly into existence, then mutually annihilate and vanish again.
This is the nature of the "quantum soup", quantum physics in curvilinear space.
At the event horizon, gravity is strong enough to tear the paired photons apart but the law of energy conservation requires that the escaping photon be paired up again leading to a slow radiation of the black holes mass.......As the particle–antiparticle pair was produced by the black hole's gravitational energy, the escape of one of the particles lowers the mass of the black hole.

Its astounding when someone makes these kind of breakthroughs in theoretical physics like Hawking did.
Probably the most amazing contribution to physics came in 1905 when Einstein published 4 papers over the span of 6 months. The work was controversial for years until eventually proven by experiment.
1) Photoelectric Effect: This advanced the wave-partical duality of light in Quantum Mechanics.
2) Brownian Motion: The theory behind random partical motion in a fluid.
3) Electrodynamics of moving bodies: States the speed of light is fixed in space regardless of how fast the body moves. Also introduces the special theory of relativity associated with time dilation when traveling near the speed of light.
4) Mass-Energy equivalence: The most famous or notorious which forms E=mc^2 which would not be proven for another ~40 years.
