Dontcha think any variant even if it was less contagious or less deadly would be classified as a VOC? Im thinking yeah and ya know what .... They will study it more.... Every variant is not something more deadly its a variant of the main thats pretty much it til theres more knowledge .... Thanks................ I think

For the rest of you:
SARS-CoV-2 undergoes mutation quite a bit. This is typical for viruses. Mutations happen by random chance. Most of these mutations have a neutral effect, meaning the new variant has the same characteristics (that are important for fitness) as the old variant and isn't going to outcompete the previous version unless it does so by chance. These variants aren't of interest because they don't have any new properties that would make COVID-19 more virulent or more transmissible or more likely to evade an immune response.
A few -- very few -- new variants gain a fitness advantage when they mutate. That means that these variants are likely to outcompete the original variant -- not because of chance but because they have an advantage. Now this doesn't mean that these variants are necessarily worse for humans. For example, a variant that outcompetes an older variant may be more transmissible but much less deadly to humans. These also aren't variants of interest. A variant of interest is a variant that gained a fitness advantage so it could outcompete the older variant AND has properties that make it more harmful to humans than the previous variant (e.g. more transmissible, more virulent, or more likely to evade an immune response. These two conditions are usually linked together.

It would be too hard to study every single variant that occurs via mutation. There are 2600 to 3200 bases in coronaviruses. This means there is the potential for 4^2600 to 4^3200 variants (4 possibilities at every position). There are tens of thousands of variants of SARS-CoV-2 that have been sequenced. You study the ones that stand out for some reason, like ones that may have a theoretically important mutation in the code for a protein. Or variants that grow significantly in frequency.

I happen to find this stuff interesting. I have been a student of biology. And I bet others find this interesting too. I'm just trying to help. I enjoy writing about this. I think it's more worthwhile to write about this than the usual hyperpartisan bullshit you often see on here.
