A little bit of sanity shines through.

LA County increases police funding by $36 million after defund movement backfires

*** NO SHIT, REALLY? *** 🤷‍♂️

LAPD's budget was cut by $150 million last summer

$36M seems like a meager refund but at least they will give alternative policing methods with additional funds.

From the third link below...

"The board voted to amend the law enforcement contracts to increase funding by $36 million, instead of the $111 million requested, with L.A. Metro CEO Phillip Washington or his designee responsible for dividing it among the three law enforcement contracts. The contract will last through Dec. 31, while previously it was set to last an extra six months."

"Mayor Eric Garcetti — who chairs the board — City Councilman Mike Bonin and several board members also amended the motion to instruct Metro’s CEO to include at least $40 million in the fiscal year 2022 budget for investments in alternatives to policing, including transit ambassadors, elevator attendants and a flexible dispatch system to enable a response by homeless outreach workers, mental health specialists and unarmed security ambassadors."

It could be a trillion and LA would still be a shithole in an outhouse surrounded by a skunk breeding farm.

Happy they got the funds so they can play pretend they give a shit.

Even the most ardent police supporters must admit the cops are sent to all kinds of calls that would be better handled by people with different training. Don't understand why more people don't embrace that. Moving that funding to people trained to handle those types of calls would be better for everyone...including the police.

It is kind of weird how the party's had a flip in the 90's-2000s. Bill Clinton had his COPS program to provide funding to put 100,000 more police officers on the street by 2000. Mixed results, but it was the Republicans who ended it. The Heritage Foundation supported ending it. Post 9/11 world and all that. Now 14 years later they flipped again.

^ We should send you out on the next "domestic"
Shove you in the door first
And, let you baffle them with your bullshit
Til they give up
Or, more likely kill themselves
Death by Dresden

and this just in.....

Public school teachers in Oakland, Calif., have opted not to return to the classroom until the mandatory start date in mid-April, despite priority vaccinations and cash incentives.

School officials on Thursday, were forced to cancel their previously scheduled reopening dates next week at six elementary schools and 10 preschools, reported the San Francisco Chronicle.

After seven months of distance learning, some students were supposed to be able to head back to in-person teaching on Tuesday, as agreed to by the district and unions.

But due to a lack of teachers willing to come back before April 14, high needs pupils, including homeless, foster and special needs students, will not be able to get into classrooms ahead of time, the newspaper reported.

"At this time, we simply do not have enough staff who opted in for in-person instruction to open our classrooms to K-2 and priority students on Tuesday," a Cleveland Elementary School official said in a letter to parents. "Although this is disappointing news, please know that we are working hard to make sure we find every way possible to serve our students safely."

Oakland parents frustrated with the district and union’s inability to force teachers to return for in-person teaching on Tuesday have called the situation "laughable."

"Parents are very frustrated and in particular children who’ve experienced isolation, depression, all of those things," a spokesperson the Chronicle. "It’s disappointing, and I’m very sympathetic to the families. I wish more teachers were volunteering."

^ Easy resolution: Don't show up for work - start looking for a new job.

That's what happens in the RW when people don't show up for work.

Maybe when homicides climb by 38% and overall shootings go up 40%....people figure out defunding the police is NOT the answer.

We do need teams of mental health professionals to respond to situations where people act out or off their meds, especially in a family or domestic situation. Police response almost always ends in violence.
In some situations police could be as backup but not the primary responders.

We created this mess because we made decisions to close mental health facilities and psychiatric hospitals because people felt it was a 'stigma' to the people in the facilities and 'experts' felt it would be better to assimilate them into society......

'We do need teams of mental health professionals to respond to situations where people act out or off their meds, especially in a family or domestic situation. Police response almost always ends in violence.'

You do realize that most cops consider 'domestic abuse' to be some of the most dangerous calls to go out on, right?
If cops are just back up and it turns violent they're now going to have to worry not only about themselves, the innocent people involved, but some idiot social worker too.
That sounds like a recipe for disaster.

We absolutely need a branch of police to be able to respond to nuisance neighbors & basic domestic disputes with an armed office within "minutes" of arrival.

I have had a next door neighbor who is a bottom rung pain In the ass who i have had to waste local taxpayer $'a calling police just to have basic communication not possible because he is an unreasonable idiot.

"Police response almost always ends in violence."

You got stats to back that statement?
You ever think that maybe the violence would happen whether they show up or not?
Correlation always means causation?
Fuck, fuck, fuck!
Why are there so many who post so much that know so little about what they post?
If TOS covered stupidity, 90% of you would be permanently banned.
