Looks like a flag he procured with some historic significance as the rows of stars are not staggered liked the current 50 star flag. Maybe a Flag from Pearl Harbor or some other historical site/event.

-5090 is the image of a genuine flag.
You can't tell in the picture you posted that the blue field of stars is rotated 90° relative to the stripes. That does look a lot like the placement of Burns' "flag" though.

Seems to reason, the flag would be historical.
We all know the stripes represent the 13 original colonies. 7 red, 6 white stripes, thus starting in red.
Stars in corner - 7 stripes tall. Fits with the picture.
The US hasn't always had 50 states as we all know. Alaska & Hawaii were last to be added - 48 stars.
With 50, the # of stars alternate in offset rows:
5 rows of 6 stars = 30
4 rows of 5 stars = 20
With 48 - it's simpler
8 x 6
So it's simple, the flag is from sometime when the flag had 48 stars pre WWI to about the 60's

Remo is correct. That is a 48 star flag where all the rows and columns of stars line up in an 8x6 grid. This would put it between July 4, 1912, when New Mexico and Arizona became states, and July 4, 1959, when Hawaii and Alaska became states.
Since it is Ken Burns, my guess is also that there is major historical significance for this particular flag, on par with one that was on the USS Arizona during Pearl Harbor attack or the actual flag from Iwo Jima or something.

The flag itself is pretty large, that would rule it out as one that was displayed on a navel ship during WWII.
I imagine it's one that was displayed and flew over someplace stationary like the White House during FDR or Truman's terms, Potsdam, Pearl during the attack etc.
Something along those lines.

They are not “canted”. The flag is draped. What’s visible in the picture is the top of the flag, upside down
