Bed in a box?

Don’t blame Amazon, blame the government. What do you think happens when the government shuts down every store except for Amazon, Home Depot, 🎯, and Walmart? Those companies the government chose succeeded on a massive scale while all the small mom and pop stores didn’t.

I love Amazon.

Bed purchase. If not already known. Attention to dimension of bed. Those consumers that end up with doll house furniture. And quality of material, including assembling manual, could be super horrible if not familiar brand.
I'm a fan of Amazon. I incidentally purchase sparingly. Amazon Prime, I once had, useless, again if not buying enough stuff. Streaming Platform, I didn't' care. There's other ways to get the same streaming content.
Mainly use for finding unique specific items, choosing through variety, purchasing items in bulk, obtaining backup items to have replacement ready in house. If something I'm looking for is significantly cheaper on amazon I'll buy it. Clothing shoes are primary in store, fitting concern. Especially with going outside my usual shoe brands. Brands differentiating in sizes, 1st world problem.
Amazon just reminds me of Sears equivalent. Now I wonder if revenue and growth comparable with adjusted inflation. Future rabbit hole search for me. Sears was the dominate retailer probably for 70 years.Until big box retailers became a thing. Sears flexing, even had the tallest building in the world for over 20 years. Willis Tower. The Sears Catalogue were free and you could buy anything from that book have it shipped to your address or near by post office(1)(2). A lot of those cute 1910-1930's LA homes are Sears Houses(3). Also little tidbit Sears Catalogue was used as toilet paper(4) . Before that, corn cob(4).
The ingenuity of Jeff bezo starting with books, amazing(5). Yes I started with buying books in like '04. Being able to work towards his goal focus on a computer matrix and distribution. Start small, gain capital, then grow and venture with that capital.
Amazon dominating, their motto "Everything from A to Z" hence their smile logo connecting to A and Z. Dominating could eventually run into issues for being a monopoly, Anti-trust laws.
Amazon cars, the car industry is such a high risk business venture. For startup a large amount of development money with long delayed profit. That's why the US only has GM,Ford,Chrysler, with their subsidiary brands. They have had their own multiple financial problems besides 2008-2009. Examples of how difficult the Independent defunct US mass car manufactures gone by 1950's-1960's Packard,Studebaker,Hudson,Nash, Willy's after being around for 50 something years. Some merging into AMC, gone by 1980's. High risk business. Now with fewer younger generations buying, even tougher. Tesla wasn't a smooth ascent, took 18 years to have their first year profit(6).Amazon deep pockets yes typically though based off of investors willing to stick with a long money pit, Investors uselessly want short term financial gains.
More concern of dominance if Amazon made their own city like Walt Disney wanted to do with his Florida Project(7a) of EPCOT, but instead of corporations lending the city inhabitants to try their new products(7. Amazon would be the only way through commerce while collecting data. Company formed cities were a thing of the late 19th and early 20th century.(8a)(8(8c)
The creation and speed of having their own separate delivering fleet of vehicles, including airplanes, was the real surreal thing to witness. That took FedEx around 15 years to achieve, Amazon around 3 years. How Amazon force their warehouse employees to feverishly keep pace is cruel (9). That's why trying towards automation.
Establish stores say Macy's or Petsmart. The strategy of competing with Amazon is futile. They should partner with a long term agreement. Handing amazon their warehouse & distribution, that way relinquish that carrying cost. Fun example of dire choice of competition Petsmart purchasing of Chewy.com they borrowed for that purchase and payments will be hitting soon, they may default , because revenue isn't there for that debt payments(10). Compared to Petco who decided not to even compete with Amazon(10).

Yep; Sears...the original Amazon. The execs at Sears laughed at Amazon being competition. Poof. Bye bye Sears.
Jeff Bezos left running Amazon when the going is good so he can play with his real dream. Rockets.
Amazon is nice when I feel lazy.

I am an Amazon subscriber since they started selling other things than books. I think they have reached their peak, with competition from all sides catching up.
Alibaba's operating profit caught up with Amazon, which is a much bigger company with much bigger revenue. Many things on Amazon are directly from China or indirectly from Alibaba or the like. Indeed, it will be more convenient for me if people list their offerings on AliExpress rather than Amazon. The only going thing for Amazon is their return policy and short delivery time. This can change.
Amazon has a vast delivery network that can deliver you odd things the next day with a reasonable markup that nobody can match for now. But most things can wait.
Amazon grocery has been a failure. The old Amazon Fresh was way too expensive with limited choice. Before I unsubscribe, they ended up using USPS to deliver several big boxes to my door on their small van. Poor postman in uniform.
The acquisition of Wholefoods didn't change anything. It was far too expensive plus delivery and tips. Even if you go all organic, Ralph, and to some degree, Albertson's, were cheaper.
Even during the pandemic, given half the chance, many well-to-do families go to the stores for grocery even if they can afford delivery. 10% - 20% is way too much extra for the grocery bill if you have the choice.
The curbside pickup seems to be the way to go because people have cars. And they can always find some time to detour to grocery stores where they live. Walmart got there first with no markup but they were crushed by the pandemic. Only Amazon Fresh stores and Wholefoods can do it recently. But Wholefoods is a joke. They send a rookie pushing your cart out of the main entrance to chase down your car. The Fresh stores are purpose-built to handle pickups but they are few and far between.
Amazon is far ahead in the cloud. But in the end, it's not a software/tech company. Microsoft and Google are, and they have huge R&D spending on new technologies. Amazon needs to surprise us again.
And Amazon is not a hardware company. I don't have echo, more fire tablet, only an old kindle that nobody used. What they are doing is like supermarket having their own brands.
Amazon has it's own brand from toilet paper to clothes. They will be doing fine for a long time but it's low margin, which Amazon has been good at. The fact that the Alibaba operating profit matches that of Amazon says it all.

Still good for some things, but their quality has gone off a cliff.
Their reviews are bombed by Chinese review click farms. So you cant trust alot of the reviews anymore.
All kinds of knockoff crap on there now.
For simple things sure, but when it comes to anything more complicated I go elsewhere now.

It's an interesting point about Alibaba/AliExpress. Everything I've bought off that site is crap; it's the low end junk you find on Amazon, Dollar Store, Harbor Freight. I'll buy from name brands where I know I'm going to get a product with good instructions, durable, reliable etc.
I'm guessing though for a large number of people around the world that they'll go for lower quality because it's cheaper and that to them it's good enough (or from better marketing they don't know they could get better products).

Amazon is the devil!
|
|
Very scary, especially since Amazon "cancels" books, movies, etc., that hypocrite "liberal" Bezos doesn't agree with. Odd how China cracks down on Alibaba and the U.S. gives oligarch Bezos and monopolistic Amazon a pass.

|
tend to go to best buy or costco for anything of significance
ronny chieng on netfllix has a great amazon comedy bit...dude is pretty funny
|
|
here ya go...PRIME NOW
fucking youtube has everything
|
|
Prime is about convenience. Yesterday I tried to buy underwear from Walmart but I couldn't get anyone to unlock the case. After waiting fifteen minutes I left without buying underwear. Today I ordered underwear from Amazon, they will arrive Thursday.

i have considered not doing any laundry and just ordering "same or 1day" prime delivery

Amazon is great for me , I have been selling in Amazon for 2 years now and I cant complain ,
FBA is a good option if you get a good product to sell , don’t worry about shipping , you get pay every 15 days , they take care of the returns , no headache at all and just pay the FBA fees .
I like Amazon , buy and sell .
Maybe the money I made Isn’t the greatest but help me with bills and when I travel .
The secret is to keep the inventory and have enough, replace and restock .

ebb and flow.
Dutch East India company - phenomenally huge - NO one is close today.
Mississippi company & South Sea Company- poof
Standard Oil - broken up by court ruling
As was said above, Sears was dominant - now close to BK
After Sears, it was Walmart was the 900 pound gorilla.
Today Amazon? Yawn.
They won't be the dominant force forever - no one is.
It will be a confluence of things.
Who will overtake Amazon - wish I knew.
|
|
they have created an incredible amount of jobs
|
|
^^^^^^
Until they figure out how to replace them with robots.
|
|
It used to be mom&pop stores vs big box stores.
Now it is big box stores vs amazon.
I dont see many capitalism purists in this thread.
Don't worry...all those old malls that we used to love ...(well maybe not at Christmas)....that are closing up are being bought out by Amazon to be distribution centers. Now your kids instead of working Spencers gifts/hot dog on a stick/hot topic/H&M will instead be working for Bezos doing back breaking work with little pay and no benefits! Progress!
|
|
the amazon employees had a little union vote the other day...wasn't close
|
|
dtresden - don't see many capitalist purists?
We must be reading different blogs,
JR's post, mine, a few others.
Amazon - in 2021 sure is huge, but someone else will overtake them and then people will fret about them.
