Ladies beware:

"The Newport Police Department would like to take this opportunity to warn local businesses and the public about the "counterfeit" money that could begin circulating," police continued.

Officers are warning cashiers to properly identify dollars bills, look for motion picture labels and take notice that counterfeit money feels different than authentic U.S. currency.

According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, possessing counterfeit money "is punishable by a fine of up to $15,000, or 15 years imprisonment, or both.

Anyone operating a cash business (particularly one dealing mostly with 50’s and 100’s) would be wise to purchase an electronic scanner of some sort.

At minimum, everyone should have a bill marker pen which basically only tells you whether or not the paper is correct. Doesn’t mean the printing is correct. Someone could take a $1 bill, wash it clean, and re print it and the marker wouldn’t know the difference. Best thing about the pen? Very discreet. Worst thing? Counterfeits can still get by you.

Everyone really needs an electronic scanner. $130 on Amazon but the first fake bill it catches basically pays for itself. It checks for a bunch of different things. Paper, ink, watermark, UV, security thread, etc. Below is an example but you can really go crazy on them. Best thing? 100% accurate. Worst thing? They’re small but they take up space plus difficult to explain to nosy people.

Is there a counterfeit bill detector / scanner that is portable (battery powered) and you can take with you?

Asking for a friend.

OP, your last sentence is not complete. It is missing the words "fraudulent intent". Here is the full statement from Department of Treasury Bureau of Engraving and Printing:
Possession of counterfeit United States obligations with fraudulent intent is a violation of Title 18, Section 472 of the United States Code and is punishable by a fine of up to $15,000, or 15 years imprisonment, or both.
