The Salton Sea- Sonny Bono wildlife refuge has some natural salt structures and bird nesting areas. Slab City has lots of off-the-grid humans, and Salvation Mountain.
If you take Route 66 back (it parallels the I-40), there are old touristy spots like the Wigwam Motel, the meteor crater and The Flintstones Bedrock City and raptor ranch, as well as some old timey small towns like Prescott, Flagstaff and Winsow.

Thanks so much! I will look into all of these places.
Although, I remember watching a documentary about Slab City and I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to visit. Unless I'm getting it confused with another "off grid" type city.

Slab city and Salton sea visit would be more on a humanitarian scale of visit. . The people are in need of real help. The sea this time of year as it heats up is not a place to sight see. As the smell is nearly toxic.

If you come back through Route 10 you should not miss Joshua Tree. As you enter on the Eastern side through route 10 you'll see a lot of rocks and Joshua Trees. The western side has , in twenty nine palms, an Old Town Pioneer Town, Pappy & Harriet's Restaurant, many artist enclaves and from inside of the park a view of the entire Coachella Valley. It is breathtaking and usually very windy. If you visit the Salton Sea you will be able to see it from the peak of the Joshua Tree mountains. Also,

I am involved in many outreach and other type of harm reduction projects. I am all for helping those who need and want help in all ways. I just don't want to visit there, it's a gut feeling and I'm gonna stick with it.
