Just answer them truthfully. If you are having a good day then say so. If you are having a fucked-up day then say that too! Just don't try to suppress a feeling. That kind of internalization is harmful.

Usually when I asked, it's just cordial greeting. Asker not really looking for an answer.
Depending on the depth and trust of the relationship with the person asking me, I will give a light reply or a deep emotional response... Like when a Hx lady is asking. Some of my deepest friends are ladies here. Two souls sharing the same dream.

In the 40's and 50's " How do you do ? " never got answered either.

It is a gage to measure one's tone level in person. Even answering Good can be telling. Easier to hide behind a keypad.

Well in life you have good days and bad days !
I fully understand living your life the way you choose to is fine, however when family and friends ask you "how are you ?" Is because they care about your life.
Communication is so important in relationships.
Everyone is different, nowadays nothing surprise's me anymore.
