How can they argue that they are more moral/ethical/democratic than Republicans and not support (or at least not politically hurt) Republicans who attempted to hold Trump to account for his misdeeds. However, there is a large group of state legislatures, using the Big Lie as an excuse, passed laws that make it more difficult to vote. They also reserved the right to overturn the popular vote (I’m not sure if those laws were struck down as unconstitutional), and the Supreme Court will be hearing a case that will make it easier for the GOP to fuck with elections.
Taken together, it is a direct assault on our democracy.
And we are not even talking about the fake electors scheme…that’s in the past. Everything I listed are future threats.
I watched an interesting interview of a researcher who claimed that the most dangerous group of people are those who are in power but see themselves losing it. They will do almost anything, in desperation, to retain the power that they are losing. That is the GOP.
Most parties attempt to change their policy positions to appeal to a wider portion of the electorate. Reasonable gun laws are supported by 90% of the population. The GOP doesn’t care. They vote against them every time. The right to choose is supported by between 60 to 70% of the population. The GOP doesn’t care.
With those types of numbers against their positrons, how can they win? They need to gerrymander extensively, and cheat every chance they get. And then they claim Democrats are cheating, gaslighting the country through preposterous conspiracy theories.
The GOP is the biggest threat to democracy this country has ever witnessed.

I would like to think that democracy in America is so strong that the miscreants involved in the 06JAN event being punished for their crimes would send a clear message to others who might be tempted to engage in similar activity. But I fear that what we are seeing is something that goes much deeper.
I think that Americans in general are fed up with politics as usual, and I think they see the problem as being the nation being led by "professional politicians." Hence, that was the appeal of DJT. He was the direct opposite of a seasoned politician. He was brash, he was outspoken, and he was even seen as bad boy! But none of that mattered because he was not a professional politician. I can't think of another time in American history when someone like DJT would stand a chance of being elected to a high federal office.
The true genius of his campaign was the slogan MAGA - "Make America Great Again" because this struck right to the heart of what people think has happened to America in the last 40 years. We have been in decline in our morals and our ability to do what is right for the average American. We have wasted enormous amounts of taxpayer dollars engaging in foreign wars that we probably should not have been involved with. We have witnessed corruption where the people with power or money can escape prosecution while the little guy gets hammered. We are basically fed up!
When the "Arab Spring" first broke out, everyone thought that it was an isolated incident. Then it manifested itself quickly in other countries. Granted, these were all Arab countries but it was an indication that a wide spread discontent of business as usual was not going to be tolerated anymore. Since that time, I thought that a similar incident could never happen in America - Afterall, we are a well rooted democracy! Then there was 06JAN, not incited or led by a dissident politician in exile but by our very own president. The fact that the participants in the 06JAN event are being punished should make other people of similar political views take notice and go undercover, but it hasn't. They continue to show up, with guns, and challenge authorities or anyone who does not share their political views (and when they are arrested, or killed, they are seen as heroes and martyrs). This is no different than the Inquisition with a "convert or die!" mentality.
America is in a very bad state right now. It is a powder keg with a lit fuse. If we don't do something to stop it we may very well have our very own Arab Spring. What we need is a major distraction, something that will bring us together as one people. Usually a war suffices for this - but economically, that is the last thing we need right now. I think a major third political party might be the answer.

When Manafort does anything relating to the campaign, he did it on behalf of Trump (who stood to benefit).
