So that's why you stopped calling me

It's the only reason.

I don't know if it's related to your issue, but I've lost a number of free textnow numbers for not using them often enough. Their site says your number can "expire" as soon as two days of inactivity, depending on the demand for area codes. I've only used it for a couple of years but get a warning after a week of inactivity and then the number expires if I don't use it to text or call someone. I then have to choose a new number which would be a pain if I used it for contacts.
Based on my experience, they expect to see outgoing calls or texts every week or so and don't count incoming calls/ texts towards keeping the number active.
Maybe they let you slide for a while because you're a long time customer and now want you to pay or keep active. They talk about "upgrading" subscriptions so maybe its about more $$ now.

Oh I use it regularly. This is probably a sign!

I have a backup # on textnow in case my other phone app provider (paid) has issues (happens a couple of times a year). I do have a couple of people i'd like to keep in contact with in textnow so its a good reminder to move to the other textapp.

I’ve heard Google voice is the best. But can you get text messages without your phone ringing? Prying ears are always listening!

I might be a little prudish, but I see using a free texting number in any business as being "penny wise and dollar foolish." In ANY business or profession, the top performers make sure they have the best equipment necessary for the job and the best communication devices available. Communications must be fast, efficient, and most of all - reliable.
People who take the cheap way out on such an important aspect of business may be seen as cheap themselves. If you want to be seen and treated like a professional then invest in your business! Get a 5G phone (unlocked) and use one of the lower cost plans like Total Wireless ($35/mo) which is just the low cost division of Verizon. This provides Verizon quality coverage, including the basics like voicemail and call-forwarding, which is really all you need.
