Feedback on Bakersfield Area
Aug 31 2022 01:16PM more by Tatiana36dd
Tags: Central Coast, Random (All tags)

I am thinking of relocation to Bakersfield and need feedback. This would be a two program I am trying to finish up and wanted to be in a peaceful area to study. I also wanted to make sure their were enough friends out there too to hang out with while I am finishing up studies.

I like San Joaquin Valley but Bakersfield is a hell hole.

Go a little more north. Visalia.

Absolutely STAY out of bakersfield & fresno.

If you're looking in that direction I recommend you look in and around the Clovis area. It's still a pretty small town, clean and low crime. But close enough to get to the bigger towns and cities if you have to go there. It is about a 4 hours north of LA if that's a concern, about halfway between LA and SF.

I am a big fan of San Luis Obispo and actually about 10 mile west on the coast is Los Osos, which is a cool funky coastal town.

Just because you live somewhere doesn’t mean you have to work there. Take advantage of the cheaper living expenses and work in the high income areas. May require more travel time and better planning but could totally see how it would be worth doing.

Directions on how to get to Bakersfield:

Go north until you smell it,

Then turn east until you step in it!

And don't even think about Fresno, home of the "Fresno Bulldogs", one of the most violent gangs in California.

Thsnk you all for feedback. I may be doing my studies there and will mostly do travel things for my nursing and other endeavors. I suppose that once I get established again in Cali I can rely on long term friends to chill with. I live in a nicer part of town in nc and I know living in certain area would not get me many NEW friends lol.

Nicrxsweet, I may have to amend some of my thinking and be just a liiitttle bit nicer to people lol. It will be refreshing as I learn to humble myself and know that I will no longer have my Figure 8 island or Wrightsville beach pals to rely on.

Fresno
-----------

If so, North of Bullard Avenue up to the San Joaquin River is nice.

AtticusFinch is correct with Clovis being nice.

Stay along the 41 Freeway but north of Bullard Avenue.

Frankie, LOL!!! Aside from that I found a decent place with a pool and looked like it had a lake. I would definately live in a place that is safe and has a pool/lake. My studies are potentially bringing me to Bakers so I will have to make the best of it. I need to be in the city for my clinicals if I take the program there.

^ SLO is just awesome bro

Nice and cool ocean breezes with a rural feel

Very pricey though, it's definitely not much if at all cheaper than LA, OC and SD counties...

My only gripe about possibly living / retiring in the SLO / Central Coast area = Damn everything is a far drive between next city... God forbid Costco or Home Depot is out of something, the next one is 20 to 40 miles away...

For what it is worth,

i have a good friend, her goal was to become an RN. She went for it. But...

Sacrifices need to be made to attain a goal.

She had to move to remote Montana. She gave up pretty much everything but the love of those close to her.

I see how difficult it is for her, I know that she can achieve more than this goal.

She is living away from family, alone, but she will reach her goal.

I hope that you find similar in ..... bakersfield.

bakersfield sucks. hot in the summer, cold in the winter, properties aren't the best. hotels aren't the greatest. however....the housing is cheaper, of course, and it's only a little more than an hour to get to los angeles. if you don't mind the commute for business, i'd say go for it, or maybe stay at one of the hotels to get a feel for the city.

Tatiana, you obviously are going there for a specific purpose so see it as an double opportunity: one, to finish your clinical; two, to scout out another area to possibly live or invest. Never rule out an area based on stigma alone. Sigma is good to make you research an area more but nothing beats going out there to kick the tires around. Every city will have its nice block or streets that seem to contradicts the negative stigmas. As a scout for a private investors, I have seen gems in Inglewood, Lennox, Compton, South Central LA, and Inland Empire, and that was years before “gentrification” or resurgence of aerospace industry in Southbay/LAX area..

I’m excited for you, because you’ll temporarily be moving somewhere that is not priced out yet so it is fertile grounds for possible investment opportunity . I have scouted Bakersfield before. I would recommend looking near Cal State Bakersfield (west of 99 fwy). I think the closer to CSU Bakersfield, I think the better the area and more expensive. I think along Ming street there’s a lot of little commercial stores, banks, restaurants etc. I remember that street because of the villan from Flash Gordon.

Downtown Bakersfield is actually nice and clean as well as its Civic/Performance Arts Center. Big wide street like downtown Ontario/Euclid st if you know it. There a pizza and beer place next to a quaint between building courtyard that hosts live music on weekends that seem pretty friendly. The place has an basement night club. I was just passing thru so I didn’t stay long. There’s other places too but it still needs more small businesses to pop up.

There are rougher areas. A bit further north about 2-3 miles is Oildale, which has more of a hells angel biker feel with more of an unkept countryside look. East of the 99 fwy away from CSU is a mixed bag. Some pockets look very nice and some rough. My advice, ask people in your clinical program what pockets they suggest or your school has a student housing bulletin board or website.

The weather is pretty hot during summers but to me, it’s better than Vegas summer heat.

Good luck and congrats on nearing the finishing line of your program. There are quite a few LA transplants out there because LA is 2-3x’s more expensive and it is still less than 2 hours drive. The economy is depressed out there because agriculture is down due to drought.

The people who recommended Clovis and Fresno left out the fact that both cities are 2 hours away from Bakersfield, where you need to be for your program. Clovis is very nice though. It’s kinda like what Culver City would be to LA.

Lastly there’s a nice Deja Vu in Bakersfield not too far from Downtown. I “scouted” that too when I was up there. Lol

In the central valley there is the possibility of you getting Valley Fever, which will stay in your lungs, but a lot of people all live in the area. What with Covid on windy and dusty days wearing a mask would not be out of place.

As you mentioned about doing things on HX may not be that easy. If you go to the People tab and click on it, then go to the bottom of the page and search for level1 males and higher in Bakersfield there is 1. If you include level 0s there is a total of 13 guys, more than likely a lot of those 12 have never seen anyone.

I am involved in AYSO and spend 3 weekends a year there for Section 10 Playoffs. I am away from my SO and in a hotel room. Generally there are never any ladies on HX there when I travel there. There are a total of only 7 ladies who are all at level 0, probably most have not done anything. As you can see there is not a lot of HX activity there. There is probably other sites, but I have not found them.

I found List Crawler with ladies posting, but most look to be scams with no reviews.

If you are looking to play as mentioned above then you will probably traveling when you have down time.

Remember my comments only apply to the HX site. For Santa Barbara prior to the demise of the other sites we would get ladies every so often to visit, but I am sure they were on other sites and it worked for them.

I lucked out in my first venture with HX and liked the rating system to know I was not walking into a bust. As I was able to get into more clubs to try and find out some info on who I might visit.'

When I used Listcrawler when I went to Bakersfield most of the postings seemed to good to be true and that was the case. The photos were not theirs, they wanted a deposit up front and there were no reviews to know what was real. I never saw anyone. In fact one contact was upset about my asking for info on a lot of the ladies they represented. They made a bunch of empty threats trying to extort money.

I just stay with HX and play when I have client meetings that pull me south.

You know there are quite a few small towns outside of Bakersfield, if you don't mind driving 30+ minutes, that are actually pretty nice and a lot safer then bakersfield ... right?

There's Hanford & Lemore both about an hour and a half north of bakersfield & 30 minutes south of fresno. Or Buttonwillow - 30 minutes west; McFarland or Delano - about 30 minutes north.

And there are sites like tryst & private d that have a bakersfield section, as well as a fresno one. Just have to do some research.

If I was moving up there I'd take a week and drive up, visit the towns in the area and see which ones I like and that might work. Walk around & talk to the locals and then talk to several realtors to see what's available to rent and what are the current market rates.

Thank You Atti! I plan on doing that in October when I fly out for a fam event.
Appreciate all the input these is giving me more happiness. I also did a calculator research survey comparing Bakersfield ca to Raleigh nc and found that the differences on market items were only the highest on buying new cars which I am not. I will drive me or ship it and get rid of all my stuff in my apt in NC. It can all be replaced cheaper than moving it across the country. I only need my nursing books and computers! Yeah utilities are going to be way more expensive.

A suggestion though - you'll be living in America's bread basket.
So don't buy your fresh fruit and veggies from a market! Go directly to the farmers or there are a lot of farmers markets go to them. You'll get better food and you'll be dealing with the farmers directly.
I have friends that live in central & northern parts of the state and they deal directly with farmers for just about everything from beef and pork to peaches and plumbs to cauliflower and broccoli. The food's awesome and so much tastier cause it gets to stay on the tree or vine longer.
But you'll have to deal with a family owned farm not a corporate behemoth like monsanto.

Glad I could help.
