Lots of actors who went a long way from that show.

The characters in the show had great names. “Maynard G Krebs”, played by Bob Denver, who was Gilligan in Gilligan’s Island. Thalia Meninger, played by Tuesday Weld. And my favorite, “Chatsworth Osborne, Jr”, played by a young Steve Franken.

I know for sure The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis reruns aired for a few years, I think in the early 1990's, most likely on Nick@Nite. For some reason I'm thinking it was in a regular re-run block really late at night with The Dick van Dyke show, Green Acres, F Troop, and maybe Get Smart. I remember there was not much on TV after Letterman, so I usually landed on these gems pretty regularly. Maynard G. Krebs for the win.

older cousin was over last week...asking me if I knew who dobie gillis was?
NOPE
he went on to talk about how bob denver was on that show before gilligan's island --- basically before my time
saw the news flash yesterday...he was over at the house again and I mentioned it looked like the dude he just TALKED last week had passed on. quite the coincidence
started reading about his life/career...dude had quite the run in hollywood
think he died on denver's Bday also

I was in high school during the Dobie Gillis years. A couple of my buddies and I started dressing like Dobie: light chinos and plaid button-down shirt. As some ladies on this site can attest, I still dress the same way today. When coat and tie were required, we followed the lead of Craig Stevens on Peter Gunn.
No cargo shorts or flip flops in those days. What changed it all? I trace it back to the appearance of the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. Music, dress and culture changed practically overnight.

I'm surprised that no one brought up Sheila Kuehl, who played Zelda on Dobie Gillis, she is now an LA county supervisor.

I just read “Zelda’s” biography. She is an amazing person, having gone to Harvard Law School while in her 30’s, serving in the California legislature, and now being an LA Supervisor. I knew Zelda was smart, but in real life, she is really smart!
