Actually, mitigation methods can stop the spread. Look at China. But you have to act when cases are extremely low, and the intensity of mitigation you need would not fly in the US.
Instead, we were trying to "delay the spread" (like when we "bent the curve."). This would prevent hospitals from being overwhelmed, protect the vulnerable temporarily, and give us time to come out with the vaccines and therapeutics.
Now that we have vaccines that protect well against severe disease and are on our way to being stocked with therapeutics that do the same, the need to do mitigations is coming to an end. The vulnerable are well protected. Society should go back to normal. People have the right to protect themselves however they wish. We need to gain immunity through natural infection of a protected population and the vaccines.
One comment about China. They've done well at preventing cases and coming out with a vaccine, but the flipside is they aren't acquiring the immunity to help end their pandemic.

This information is misleading. I'll quote what the report says right after it gives this information:
"When interpreting Table 3 [for hospitalizations] it should be understood that in a population with high vaccine coverage, the majority of cases will occur in vaccinated individuals. In comparison to the vaccination uptake in England there are higher proportions of cases in unvaccinated individuals and lower proportions who have received their third dose or booster. Vaccine effectiveness cannot be inferred from this table and vaccine effectiveness is described in section 3 below.."
The same goes for deaths.
Actual odds of hospital admission for the following groups:
Unvaccinated - 1 (reference)
28+ days since first vaccination - 1.02, Confidence Interval: (0.72-1.44)
14+ days since second vaccine dose - 0.35, Confidence Interval (0.29-0.43)
14+ days since third vaccine dose - 0.19, Confidence Interval (0.15-0.23)
Acquiring immunity, whether though vaccination or natural immunity, is the way to get out of this pandemic.
Get vaccinated if you don't have antibodies yet. Get vaccinated if you want to improve your immunity.
