My favorite.
So so many. You can just tell seeing them LIVE.
Eddie Van Halen
Clapton - in his prime, described as "The Cadillac of Guitar Players"
Carlos Santana
Slash (!)
Angus Young
Les Paul
And many more ...
No such thing as 'The Best Ever'.
There are many guitarists that are, or are/were considered, virtuosos -
Eddie V
Clapton
Jimi
The Late GREAT Michael Hedges
Page
Steve Howe
and list goes on.
It's like talking about the greatest Bass player.
You've got people like
The Late GREAT Chris Squire
Getty Lee
The Late GREAT Joco Pastorious
and again the list goes on
Each of them are GREAT but as to the best?
It's a discussion with no answer or end.
Atticus Finch

Uli Jon Roth, Frank Marino, Ritchie Blackmore, Yngwie Malmsteen... on and on and on....
Jimmy Page
Eric Clapton is my favorite and has topped a few all time great charts. However when asked how it felt to be the best ever Clapton replied "I don't know, go ask Prince."
Page, Hendrix, Stevie Ray, Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Eddie VH,...
Michael Schenker
Andrés Segovia
Jeff Beck
Stevie Ray Vaughn. Eddie Van Halen. Jeff Beck. Jimmy Page. Brian May.
B.B. King. Chuck Berry. Hendrix. Prince. The brothers can play guitar too!
Jimmy Page based on the production work he did in studio. He fell short on live performance.
Eddie Van Halen did great in studio and live.
Hendrix was a force taken from us way to soon. He showed there are no boundaries to artistic style and technique. Anyone who can play a guitar backwards and make a living has special talent.
don't know if it's a true story, but i've read Jimi was asked what it's like being the world's greatest guitar player
his reply: "I don't know, you'll have to ask Rory Gallagher"
I agree w/ AF - there isn't a "best ever" - it is somewhat subjective.
With that out of the way, I personally favor SRV. Saw in 1989 in the Cotton Bowl, he was one of the opening acts for the Who.
SRV simply blew everyone else out of the stadium. Legend.
Here is a fact though:
Buckethead - He has more "studio" albums than any other guitarist. By far.
Robin Trower. Tony Iommi
Oh shit.
I agree with Angler.
Jimmy Page is my favorite.
Best rock guitarist / songwriter combination
all the ones mentioned here and here is another Peter Green founding member of Fleetwood Mac before it turned into a pop band
Definitely Jeff Beck
But Clapton is the only three time hall of famer
SRJ. BB King said of him “I never heard the man play a wrong note.”
But much much love and respect to many of the deserving talent discussed here.
When Jimi, Jimmy, Stevie, Rory and Eric were sitting around the pub one night and asked "What's it like being the best rock guitar player in the world?"
In unison, they all said, "I dunno, you should ask GoballsDeep"
BTW, Prince sucks ass
GBD:
I respectfully disagree. I was at the Rolling Stones concert in 1981, where Prince was an opening act with George Thorogood and the Destroyers and the J. Geils Band. And I was one of 100,000 who called him a "fag" and booed him off the stage. Hand I been in more expensive close up seats, I would have thrown shit at him too. But what did I know then? I was a stupid high school kid!
Prince was a great guitarist. And he played over 20 instruments. He was a prolific songwriter, who wrote hits for artists like The Bangles, Sheena Easton, Stevie Knicks, Chaka Kahn, Patti LaBelle, and Alicia Keys.
27 instruments! https://www.unilad.co.uk/music/prince-sang-all-the-parts-and-played-all-27-instruments-by-himself-on-his-first-album/

Joe Walsh
Don Felder
Eddie Van Halen
Jimmy Paige
Eric Clapton
Jimmy Hendrix
Brian May
Davey Johnston
check out this Tits McGee chick on instagram @mimisounds her playing is really impressive.
I think???? I hope I'm not being wooed in by her boobs.
I watched Prince play, it was crap and Jimi would've been embarrassed for him
I don't care about how he looked faggy or whatever you call it
Just going off the music, he should stick with the other 26 instruments
Neil Young plays better lead guitar.
And, don't get me started on his big hit "Purple Rain"
What a boring POS that is
Just my 2 cents but I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire
Django Rheinhart
Robert Johnson
Buddy Guy
Muddy Waters
Robert Cray
Duane Allman
There's a bunch more of the best beyond that
Prince isn't in the top 500
Dolly Parton wrote a thousand songs, many classics, but can't sing for shit
Maybe Prince wrote some good ones but I've never seen any on a single list of the best songs
Ever
End of story
Fuck the artist formerly known as Prince
I would put Prince in the same camp as Tom Scholz - brilliant in their own respective rights.
The greatest rock guitarist of all?
Fuck No.
Just noticed we need a shout out for the ladies like
Bonnie Raitt, played a mean slide guitar
Samantha Fish, eminently fuckable and damn good
Sister Rosetta Tharp
Susan Tedeschi
Ana Popovic
Prince
My Favs, with Respect to the many Great Guitarist we've heard.
Randy Rhoads
Eddie Van Halen
Gary Moore
Slash
and this cute girl online named Zaria. (Dave Mustaine made her an Honorary member of Megadeth).

@YellowB2
@GBD
I was at near the stage at that concert. As I recall, Prince asked the 100k crowd to clap and repeat after him:
"Jack
Me
Off"
And that was it. The crowd started booing and throwing their shoes and garbage at him.
Side note: George Thorogood Rocked the House!
My vote is SRV and Clapton. So many to enjoy. We are lucky.
A couple more honorable mentions:
Mark Knopfler
Steve Howe
Joe Walsh
Wow! I surprised no one's even mentioned -
The GREAT Dwayne Allman!
or
Joe Bonamassa
Atticus Finch
Don't know how many of you will remember these guys but..........
Leslie West - Mountain "Mississippi Queen" and others
Alvin Lee - Ten Years After
Kim Simmonds - Savoy Brown
AF, look up a few posts and you'll note that I mentioned Allman and spelled his name correctly
But failed to mention a very underrated guitarist, Dickie Betts
And, possibly the greatest American Guitarist across different types of music (2nd after Jimi)
Jerry Garcia!!!!
Blues, Rock, Folk, Pedal Steel, Banjo, 30 min long Dead Jams
Uniquely American talent and one of the best
You fuckers ran out of gas, so going out on a limb here to recommend you watch this.
The Other One: The Long, Strange Trip Of Bob Weir
Anybody remember John Mclaughlin?
Saw him play with Carlos and the Mahavishnu Orchestra..........all I can tell you is.......holy fuck
Ok, not purely rock but............
Art Dimeola & Larry Coryell
Who's Art Dimeola?
I've heard of Al Dimeola but never Art.
Atticus Finch
I saw Clapton, when he was with Cream, and Jimi H. was one of the best ( the boy up and died, before I had a chance to see him).
But!
Steve Cropper.
Long regarded as one of the finest studio guitarists in the music industry.
Associated Acts:
Booker T. & the M.G.'s, the Mar-Keys, the Blues Brothers, Otis Redding, the Jeff Beck Group, Sam & Dave, Ringo Starr, John Lennon, Carla Thomas, Tower of Power, Wilson Pickett, Eddie Floyd, Ambergris, Albert King
This is alphabetically not numerically
Beck
Clapton
Halen
Hendrix
May
Page
Perhaps not in that group, but a personal journeyman favorite
Santana
Hard to argue with the lists of players on this thread. There are many, many great guitar players. As we seem to be focusing on electric guitar players (e.g. where is Paco de Lucia on anyone's list) let me apply some criteria:
Which guitarists really changed the course of the river? Who brought a style, new sounds, unique equipment use to the party? Who were the guys that everyone tried to emulate?
The answer is simple. Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen.
No others can match their influence.
Actually, Les Paul, in my opinion, changed the river more than any other.
Les Paul invented the solid body electric guitar. That paved the way for the great guitarists to follow.
The above, plus Roy Buchanan and John Renbourn.
Alex Lifeson, EVH, Rick Emmet, Joe Satriani, Randy Rhodes.
I'm doubling down on Hendrix because he not only an influential guitarist but also the lead singer of a 3 man band.
No room for error but the guy rocked with only a drummer and base player. No rhythm guitar.
Sorry for this last post but the damn spell check changed Al to Art, sorry
Great lists!
