I've tried Cuban restaurants from San Diego to coastal LA. Their bases are amazing.
Pollo asada
Empanadas (beef)
Masa de Puerco #1!
Steamed yucca
And their mojito
Are my staples and favorites

People say good things about Habana in Irvine and Costa Mesa. I have not had the pleasure yet.
|
|
@notsofast. Noted. I've been to circle in orange from r Cuban. And that's really been my extent in OC. Particularly people looking for a full menu (Puerco de masa), not just Sammies.

My autocorrect Is hideous.. inputs words I hadn't typed.

Habana is kind of hip Cuban-ish, but not bad.
Felix at the Orange circle is much better for the traditional Cuban dishes. Hannah, since you've been to both, how did Felix compare to Flamingo?
|
|
I wasn't impressed with Felix. Not as garlicy, citrus y, nor the meat as tender. Didn't love the mojo sauce on the yucca.
I do still prefer Flamingo Palms tenderness and juicyness and a true balance of Cuban flavors.
|
|
I'd add how much I enjoy the mango chutney for the empanada at flamingo as well. And pre COVID and amazing sunday buffet of it all
|
|
Awesome, that's good to know. A bit of a drive from Costa Mesa but I'll definitely keep it in mind if I'm out near Rancho.
|
|
Habana is just ok. Most authentic place is Porto’s. Even Cuban coffee…..and no fries. It’s plantain chips that are homemade
Highly recommend

Best Cuban Restaurant is this hole in the wall place in Downey off of the 5 Freeway & Lakewood Blvd.
Florida Restaurant --- 10025 Lakewood Blvd - just north of Florence Avenue
Flamingo Palms out there in the Ontario Mills area is really good though

@pete, ive been there. Bread may be hotter and fresher although pork was dry. Who likes THAT??
Lol. I did like the atmosphere.
It's a close second to flamingo.
Signed, Still searching

I'd been to Lakewood as a GASCO training had been nearby.
Signed, still better than portos 😌

I miss Versailles!
It used to be just around the corner when I lived in Manhattan Beach.
I may have to make my way out to Flamingo Palms.
Hannah, since you are the connoisseur, where can I find a good Cafe Cubano?....preferably in the SGV.
|
|
I have had Cuban food in Miami, and here at Versailles and various other Cuban restaurants, and I just don't think the food is all that great.
Habana in Costa Mesa is an excellent restaurant to take a date. Very romantic and fun. The food is decent, too.
