It's my understanding that since California is a "No Fault" divorce state...that none of that stuff matters...file for divorce...split everything accumulated durning the marriage...property brought to the marriage as well as inheritances...remain the separate property of the individual...

Your analysis of separate property is somewhat correct. However, property owned prior to the marriage remains separate property, provided you do not co-mingle it with community property. A transmutation from separate property into community property (putting spouse on title to a property/putting money in a joint account) will make that once separate property community property.
Don't ever put your wife/husband on title for ANY REASON. Don't ever put your separate money in a community account.
This goes for money prior to the marriage, and also any money or property obtained during marriage by gift, bequest, or devise.
