Black Panther' director Ryan Coogler was falsely accused of being a bank robber.

Oscar-nominated 'Black Panther' director Ryan Coogler was falsely accused of being a bank robber and was detained by police after trying to withdraw his own money ($12,000) from Bank of America.

I stated to the officers that arrested me, that had their glocks out, that I was pulling money out of my own account, Coogler said in the video, as he was freed from handcuffs.

His experience led to a public apology from Bank of America, and widespread public backlash over the bank's incompetence. It's similar to the story of a Black lawyer, who was denied when he tried to cash a settlement check.

Coogler, who is best known for directing the films Black Panther and Fruitvale Station had handed a teller a withdrawal slip on Jan. 7, asking for $12,000 in cash. He showed his ID and also wrote instructions for the bank teller on the back of the withdrawal slip, stating I would like to withdraw $12,000 cash from my checking account. Please do the money count somewhere else. I like to be discreet.

In a bodycam video, the bank teller told the Atlanta police that she received a notification from Coogler's account alerting her that his withdrawal request was a high risk transaction, which she called a "red flag". She also was skeptical based on Coggler attire. He has on sun shades, he has on a black hat. Those are the red flags we look for in the bank the teller said in the Jan. 7 bodycam footage, citing the bank's security protocols. She also added that she was pregnant and worried about her personal safety and whether or not Coogler was sketchy.

His experience led to a public apology from Bank of America, and widespread public backlash over the bank's incompetence. It's similar to the story of a Black lawyer, who was denied when he tried to cash a settlement check.

Critics say that Bank of America has a history of anti-Black sentiment.

Body cam video?

Love to see it before I comment on whether it's racism or not. Or self promotion due to setting things up to trigger a reaction.

Why ask for 12k in CASH?

I've withdrawn that much, but NOT in cash, but cashier's check.

Better way to go.

Especially since any withdrawals over 10k trigger Federal reporting requirements.

She’s going to be out of a job and on here soon. Hope she remembers to count.

Why ask for $12k cash?

Gift(s) for film crew. Strip club money. None of our business.

It would be insulting but at the same time I have personal friends who have had their own family members walk in the bank and rob their accounts with info that they stole. It is better to be safe than sorry. I don't think its racism do the fact that many white friends of mine had the bank call them and tell them their white brother or sister was trying to pull out cash of 10k or more. Could thing the bank stopped it...and again they were white so don't just think its a back thang LOL

Again sorry they he was legit and the bank was following protocol for verification. It is not a black thing as BofA had to stop thefts from White people and did follow same protocols. You have no clue how much protocol has to be done due to previous bank thefts and people having the bank to reinburse stolen funds. I have no qualms with BofA. I want to know they protect my and other's money. Sorry that during protocols they make a mistake or two.

I can understand the Bank may have a policy on large withdrawals but why did they call the police. ? I do not know if this would have escalated here in Ca.

Gee gosh whillikers, OP.

You forgot the part where he wrote on a slip of paper asking the teller to be discreet and his 2 friends were waiting out front in a car with the motor running. Then, the flag came up on the account. Any deposits or withdrawals of more than $10k rings the bell.

Details are important.
Apology was offered and accepted
More important shit going on than this old story.

My bad, you did put it in there.
All in all, a sketchy transaction.
