I think you our key point about extremism is totally on point. Extremism is any form (except perhaps extreme sexiness) is bad. I think being “woke” to the experiences of others and a fine. On the other hand, I’ve encountered people in the “woke community” who won’t use terms like “blind sided” because they think it is s offensive to blind folks. That’s just fucking stupid, not woke. But people who don’t understand what it’s like to be Black in America have never been stopped for a DWB (driving while black). Understanding that DWB stops happen is what it means to be woke.
Regarding history, you don’t see swastikas or statues of Goebbels or Goering or Hitler in Germany. Why? Because they were very bad people promoting very bad things. The southern “heroes” of our own Civil War are in the same category because they were fighting to maintain a system where Black people were considered property, not human beings.

This is a great topic.
In today's society there are stark similarities of Pre WW2 Germany with today's Cancel Culture, zest to "rebuild" a greater society, identify a racial culprit for the wrongs of today, and erase history, literature, and music.
The more disturbing counter examples with Woke ideology is the introduction of completely false narratives through literature and texts into education and then the forced acceptance of this whole gender fluidity thing.
This is complete bullshit and has no place in K-12 education. Examples are the 1619 Project which is a gross distortion of history. The texts related to gender concepts are vile and qualify as porn and serve no educational purpose except to confuse a majority of readers.
There's literally an indoctrination of complete nonsense underway and the people pushing it hide behind the "well we are free to express our opinions" thing while at the same time blocking the free speech of those more familiar with "normal".

^ Nicely stated! And yes it is true that we don't see public adoration of the Nazis because, in the end (important to understand) they were deemed to be very bad people. But that was not always the case; at the time of the book burnings in Germany they were considered messiahs. It was only after WWII that, in retrospect, they were viewed very negatively.
So I guess the question is, how will history treat those who do things similar to what the Nazis did? Those politicians that 'today' are seen as true patriots but whose policies and ideas on what constitutes a "Great Society", but in the end will be viewed quite differently. And how far will the populace go in condoning those activities now, even through complacency, only to have to back tread on their positions in the future when it is ultimately deemed and accepted that it was all a very bad idea?

I think it's more accurate to compare today to Russian Bolshevism, the use of identity politics, and openness to socialism to break society down. Main difference is there is no dictator. Instead, it's the corporations that cause the fog of war and division.

@jackrabbit33
There exist a tug-of-war in our society on these issues, but it is being driven by extremist, on both sides - and that is the point I am trying to make. If we were to reject the extremist views and attempts to persuade others to those views then maybe it wouldn't be that big of an issue. Maybe there wouldn't be so much discord. Maybe hatred would not carry the day!
|
|
^ Agreed
But I dont think the people pushing back against ...
"The more disturbing counter examples with Woke ideology is the introduction of completely false narratives through literature and texts into education and then the forced acceptance of this whole gender fluidity thing."
...Should be considered extremists. They are merely calling out bullshit where bullshit exists.

Nothing should be burned or banned but it's even worse to rewrite stuff to fit what some % of people believe today, even if a large majority disagree with what was written.
For example, parts of the Willie Wonka book are on the chopping block now where characters are no longer "fat" or "idiots". Some references to race, gender and weight are removed so the book will be "more in tune with modern times." I don't know when we all got so fragile and why we'd trust anyone to tell us what is in tune with what..

Stop spreading Eurotrash ideology and lies. Teach the young what really happened and teach them that this isn't acceptable.
Teach young people how to heal and make real change in our own country.
Teach young people that this isn't their birthright. That others were taken advantage for personal gain. That coexistence is the long term solution. United States of Federal Corporation is an evil entity formed to enslave not only blacks, but to enslave all who are beneath the entitled rich.
I'm not woke. I've only lived it and continue to live it.
FJB. FDJT Fuck Democrats and Republicans too.
Just remember they never see war, that's why they need the poor.

Great topic! Look at all of the African countries that were colonized by European countries! They first came in with peace entreaties, but when the countries resisted, they took over the countries by force brutalizing the inhabitants. They forced their education, religion, and their way of life on them without any sense of freedom. They stole all of their natural resources and relegated them into slum areas via apartheid.
Many of those European countries have apologized for their colonization and enslavement of the inhabitants, but America has NOT! We boast that we are the greatest country in the world, but there is NO equal rights for all of her people. We see how MAGA Republicans starting with Trump harken to the good old days when they could say and do anything to keep the minority population subordinate. When they don't get their way, they say that the other parties are socialist or communists which is BS. They are only fighting cultural battles to stir up another civil war amongst races. Yes, some minorties have success, but ALL minorities should be able to succeed in America. The white majority will fly and bus immigrants in to pick their fruits and vegetables, but don't want them to be American citizens.
This is what happened in Germany with the Nazis targeting not only Jews, but other minority races that were not of pure Aryan blood. They first shut down anyone who was against them by force or propaganda, i.e. newspapers or other political parties. They created various paramilitary groups like the Oath Keepers to attract young people who felt disenfranchised because they could not get a job by saying the minorities are stealing your job. They even recruited children to snitch on their parents.
This is still happening in America with DT45 emergence claiming that the fair 2020 election was stolen. We now have social media that can spread lies 24/7 to anyone who wants to listen. We have news networks that lie about fair elections, but privately say that the elections were NOT stolen. Their hypocrisy is creating a massive division among American and Immigrants.
Being WOKE means that you understand what is happening to you and your culture and not being spoon-fed lies about Your Culture by the White Majority! That is what being woke means!
All minorities need to know the correct history of their culture and not what your Master only wants you to know.
The New Maga Republican Party cannot present what they have to offer to minorities to join their party, so instead they change laws and districts (gerrymandering) to their benefits to exclude minorities from voting, housing, education, etc. Redlining and low appraisals of Black communities is still happening today, in order to suppress Black generational wealth. Blacks do deserve reparations, because many of their lands, properties, and wealth was stolen by the white majority during the Reconstruction and Jim Crow eras. This is not the American way! Everyone should achieve success in America!

"Many of those European countries have apologized for their colonization and enslavement of the inhabitants, but America has NOT!"
Why should the entity known as the United States of America apologize for slavery? We didn't start it, and early on we took steps to stop the slave trade and importation of slaves https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Act_Prohibiting_Importation_of_Slaves. Even with the political influence of the southern states, Congress pushed to exclude future states from permitting slavery. We eventually fought a Civil War that resulted in more American deaths (620,000+) that pretty much equaled all other wars this country has fought COMBINED! In addition, there were plenty of internal revolts and events ("Bleeding Kansas", etc.) that were preludes to the Civil War and made it quite clear that the political tide in the country was turning against slavery. Too many boo-hoo liberals miss the point and think that slavery was somehow condoned and accepted by most of the country when it was clearly not, and also miss the point that the country was engulfed for 4-5 years in a bloodbath to bring a renegade pro-slavery Confederacy under control. NOBODY ELSE came over here and forced us to end slavery, we did it on our own. Do we really need to apologize for that?
Slavery has existed on this planet for THOUSANDS of years, and was brought to the New World by English, Dutch, French, Portugese and Spanish who BOUGHT these slaves from BLACK SLAVETRADERS IN AFRICA! We inherited the institution from the British upon our independence but in less than 100 years we had eliminated it on our soil (and the British eliminated it from their empire as well). Meanwhile slavery is STILL being practiced to THIS DAY in parts of Africa. Now who should be apologizing again?

The Catcher in the Rye definitely needs to be burned. Complete rubbish.

Still being practiced in the middle east. Ask most of the women.
And China, if we count the Uighur enslavement.

Good discussion. Who said HX blogs do not contain excellent analysis from time to time. ?
Just a couple thoughts. First, the culture wars are one of the tools the countrys financial elites use to control and divide people and keep us from uniting for our common struggle for a better life. You can see that in many blogs on this site as well.
Also, historically fascism has always come from the right. I am not saying it cannot come from the left but history has played out differently. Also fascism is the subjugation of working people of all colors, , races and religions by the worst of the financial elites. It was basically class subjugation in many respects.
Re slavery we should not forget it was slavery that the colonies themselves got their value. Not just the south but the north as well But there came a time where the plantation society of the south came into a major conflict with the growing industrial and economic elites of the north leading to the Civil War.

Gaytonys adulterated and bowdlerized history of slavery in America is the most consummate argument in defense of teaching Critical Race Theory I can possibly imagine. Dumb white men aint going to fix themselves.
|
|
You referring to me? Tell me ONE thing that I said that was factually incorrect - you can't...
GT
|
|
I read GaijinTony's post and it's on point and accurate.
The people trying to tear down these historical facts and introduce CRT and the concocted 1619 Project are the ones creating intentional racial division.
|
|
Why is it hard for white people to admit that America is a racist country? We see it all in America’s history from slavery, the Trail of Tears, and even racist documentary like the Birth of A Nation! Even when America elected its first Black President, racial hatred grew exponentially with more white supremacist organizations growing! You see politicians yelling out at the SOFU speech that he was a liar! If he was white, that never would have happened back then.
You see so many older white people wishing that they could openly hate fellow American minority!
There is nothing false about the 1619 project because it tells the TRUE American history! White people always want to tell Black Americans history in their own way but it is up to us to make sure that our Black children know the truth about America! We don’t care about making other race feel bad about slavery, Jim Crow! We just want the truth be told! Simple as that!
I just watched a movie with Humphrey Bogart called Black Legion about how the white majority will brutalize immigrants and minorities if they do not get their way! We are not going back to Jim Crow, or slavery so understand that!
|
|
Thank you all for engaging in a predominantly respectful discussion (only one instance of irrelevant name-calling that I saw) UP TO THIS POINT! And I hope we can continue to do so.
I don't necessarily agree with things like CRT or the 1619 Project, but I don't feel threatened by them either. But in the search for truth on any subject I find that I am compelled to at least hear the other side of the debate. In doing so, it is most helpful to exercise some empathy, no matter what I think about the the authors of that position. That is the only way I find that I can make a reasonable determination of the facts, which ultimately shape my opinions on what is true, not true, or forever relegated to a status of an unknowable or unsolvable fact. Case in point:
I once read a book titled "Misquoting Jesus - The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why." Authored by Bart D. Ehrman, chair of the religious studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Unquestionably a renowned authority on the early church and the life of Jesus. But it was seen as rather blashmethous by mainstream Christians. So, to add balance to my decision making process of determining if I wanted to believe what another person was trying to sell me on, regardless of his credentials, I read 2 books that specifically countered Mr. Ehrman's theories. One of those books was; "Misquoting Truth - A Guide to the Fallacies of Bart Ehrman's Misquoting Jesus", by Timothy Paul Jones. I have lost and forgotten the title of the other book countering Ehrman.
The point is this; Would I, should I, allow someone, anyone, to cram their version of history and the truth down my throat without even trying to understand any opposing view? It didn't matter what the subject was, it was the process that I was leary about, and the knowledge that brainwashing is a very simple and effective tactic - one that I did not want to fall victim to by unquestionably believing in any one man's story.

@ jimbo "You see politicians yelling out at the SOFU speech that he was a liar! If he was white, that never would have happened back then."
LOL. You just make things up all the time, don't you, jimbo? Although you have difficulty making it clear, I surmise that you are referring to President Obama in the quote above. President Biden, who is, as far as I know, white, just gave his own SOTU speech, and there were clearly politicians calling him a liar. It's all captured on film.

Nice, I learned a new term in an Hx blog. "bowdlerized". Maybe it's common usage but it's new to me.
I forget who said it but I suspect it's true. 1/3 of the people are fanatic's, 1/3 are reasonable & pragmatic and 1/3 don't give a shit (the complacent). 66 % of citizens 18 years and older voted in the 2020 election which seems to validate it. Ish.
I used to believe the only answer to misinformation was more information. They burn books, write more. I'm not sure any more as there's just too much information and misinformation for anyone to process and most of what we get in the press is motivated by malign intent (fuck Rupert Murdoch etc.).
However, despite today’s dumpster fire du jour, I’m personally more optimistic along the Steven Pinker “Enlightenment Now” / MLK “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice” lines. We were, for hundreds of years, undoubtedly a very racist country (along with many others). There are still legacies to that we need to address. We are much less racist now, that's progress. Let’s all agree to commit to keep getting better.

^ PRAISE THE LORD! We can't affect the past, but we can sure affect the future. Time to give hatred and division a break and try something different, like maybe getting along with each other! I know, childish dream, but people like Elon Musk make me believe that dreams can come true (except for winning the lottery).

Vanguard's CEO just announced that he's pulling the company OUT of Net Zero Managers Initiative, which effectively shot ESG in the head.
ESG, like CRT, is another bullshit theory promulgated by Progressives in their desire to remake the planet to fit their edenic visions of a perfect world........idealistic garbage.
What does this have to do with book burning?
Progs have found that infiltrating and polluting society's institutions (education, government, NGO's, etc.) is far more effective than burning a few books here and there.
CRT? Garbage socialist theory where race is simply used in place of class and where we would all be governed by a class of "race technocrats" that are solely and uniquely qualified to interpret CRT and mete out justice to everyone else.
ESG? Equity, Social and Corporate Governance..........more bullshit designed to make you one of the herd.
Both similar to book burning in their desire to "control" but significantly more destructive to society.
|
|
Remind me again which books "MAGA" is burning?
|
|
^For starters, Harry Potter novels, the Twilight saga, True Blood novels.
Then we get into counties with banned books and elected conservative leaders saying which books should be allowed and which should be banned from education and libraries.
|
|
"Why is it hard for white people to admit that America is a racist country?"
Because it isn't. We have our faults but we have bent over backwards to address the wrongs of the past in a way that no other society has done in the past - and nobody else in the planet forced us to do it either.

BTW, I have to laugh when militant blacks who demand separate accommodations on college campuses ("safe spaces", race-based clubs and societies, separate graduation ceremonies, not allowing white people in certain classes) whine and cry about such things as "Jim Crow". It's just as equally ludicrous for them to complain about "racism" on college campuses when many of them get "Diversity" admissions to colleges where their average SAT scores are LESS than the minimum cutoff scores for whites and Asians. Funny how the group that demands and GETS the most special treatment still whines and cries that somehow in America the cards are stacked against them.

Considering the woke movement is trying to have books about gangbangs, orgies, transgenderism and anal in schools, I have no problem with censoring their books.

Hi Marissa
You asked about similarities and it goes to what you said next “we are adults, with the capacity to analyze and decide the issues of today…” Many people don’t analyze. I feel, in today’s world, people cite one sided arguments from personalities on various media platforms which lines up with their political or religious views.

this chick running the education system?
Randi Weingarten screams about student debt outside SCOTUS: ‘That is not fair!’
|
|
Not anymore but the amount of damage that leftist did the education system may be irreparable.
|
|
Scratch that. She’s still inflicting damage on kids from the AFT and the AFL-CIO.
|
|
Weingarten should figure out how to make the public education system provide value to the taxpayers and society.
Then the folks who move on to college have a better chance of getting into a field of study which brings value instead of a social justice warrior degree.
Too many people going into debt for bullshit degrees and ending up at Starbucks.
Mike Pompeo says Weingarten is the most dangerous person in the world.
|
|
i think you can mostly TELL by how they look
maybe we need some examples of it going the other way if it exists
|
|
“ Mike Pompeo says Weingarten is the most dangerous person in the world.”
When you have the power to brainwash the future generations with whatever you want them to believe, I can’t blame him.
|
|
I think Pompeo is correct!
There really is only one difference between education and brainwashing - and that is intent. And the most effective technique is to get them young, give them a mantra (like a children's rhyme, or the pledge of allegiance), then pound it into them everyday! Teacher's are in the best position to indoctrinate children, but only if the parents are apathetic about it and don't talk to their children about what they are learning at school. The both parents working scenario probably views teachers and schools more like a great babysitter.
|
|
anyone in California with K-12 kids better think real hard about private school.
|
|
Much like anything worthwhile in society, it takes decades to build an effective educational system, but can be destroyed fairly quickly. Our standard of living has spoiled us into unprecedented laziness. Too much content to list here, but once we lose our competitiveness it will overwhelm us. Chinese & Indian kids are learning hard core math & science skills while our kids pursue social justice majors and expect to get six-figure salaries. At that point capitalism is blamed as opposed to facing reality and accepting human nature. Completely delusional.

I have a quick question for JackRabbitt, Sleepyone and the starfish.
When did you last visit one of your great-grandchildren's classrooms?
Or go to a PTA meeting ?
|
|
that with the help of your dog?
probably more connected than you can possibly imagine btw
|
|
Dude, It was a simple question.
Folks are clearly entitled to their opinions, but that doesn't make them worth much, unless there's a little additional context why should anyone give a s&*(t. There's this constant parade of people bitching about the quality of education and wokeness and quoting Mike Pompeo, so I'd think the only reasonable thing to do was ask WTF.
And yes, since that^^ does fit the angry grandpa profile, my dog said I should include that grandpa bit. She thought it was funny.

nope on the grandpa thing...two going thru the system now
no complaints with the shit in "their" classes
