What we see and think as normal is a very clear cut differentiation of either a male or female. But when I see the word potential I imagine that it is not always so cut and dried. Genetics obviously plays the dominant role in determining a person's gender but the presence of hormonal influences during the development stage opens the door to a host of variations. This is information that I have known in my adult life. But being the (hopefully) non-judgmental and inquisitive person I am, I decided to educate myself further on the subject by doing some simple research. So thank you OP for this blog, it triggered another learning experience.
Reading the article of Intersex opened my eyes to a new understanding of what many would described as "gender confused", or "gender conflicted." What the article does not address is the psychological aspects of actually being Intersex, which could (and probably is) the byproduct of one's upbringing, religious influences, and social interactions. But it is now clear in my mind that when someone says, "I feel like a woman trapped in a man's body!" that they may be speaking a truth that they do not understand scientifically, but it is real nonetheless.
Do yourself a favor and take a few minutes to do your own research and see if it doesn't at least open your eyes a little. I don't expect an overnight change in any life-long male dominated opinions, but maybe it could affect your tolerance levels.

I don't believe that a genetic male should be allowed to compete against genetic females in athletic events. Males obviously have genetic superior strength over females. But when you consider the psychological aspects of "gender variation" then I am a little more accepting.
Ever been to a concert or sporting event and notice the difference in the lines of the male and female restrooms? For that reason alone I am now in favor of unisex bathrooms. And I will admit, at first I thought unisex bathrooms were an insult and an attack on our good christian morals and values - but as in a lot of things, what was considered immoral, absurd, and unrealistic to begin with ultimately becomes common and widely accepted. It's called progress (not as in "progressive").
The gay community suffered some of the worst discrimination imaginable during the 70's, 80's and 90's - and yet they survived; some would say even thrived. What makes you think that you can legislate them away? They are here to stay, so we can either fight it, and them, and spend the majority of our life in mental conflict, or we can agree that they have a place in society. We don't need to like them or even accept them, but for our own peace of mind we should probably learn to tolerate them.
The argument that morally corrupt things are being taught in schools is a lame excuse for incompetent parenting. How hard is it to ask, "What did you learn in school today?", then address the subject with your own views and opinions. If they have more confidence in what a teacher says versus what their own mother or father would say, then the parent needs to look in the mirror to see the culprit of that seemingly irrational education. I don't have a problem with them being taught differing viewpoints and being allowed to develop their own opinions, that is how they become intelligent adults. Teaching someone how to think vs. what to think should be the goal, and that is difficult to do when the knowledge base is one-sided.
In re: "Overwriting human history . . . " - It is not a book you pull from the shelf, it is a work in progress, one that neither you nor I will have the pleasure of reading its final chapter - but safe to say, it will probably look much different than today's realities.

So this throws the HR dept at this massive Hollywood Production Company into chaos. Where is Bob going to use the bathroom? We have to have meeting over meeting about how we speak to Bob so we don't get our ass sued off, etc, etc.
New Unisex restrooms created with subtle instruction given to Bob to use them, approved by an army of lawyers of course. Sensitivity meetings for all at an untold cost, etc, etc. Everybody seems to have survived and Bobby is welcomed back with open arms. Yep, the expense encountered was probably crazy. But in 10 years time it may become so common place that HR already has it incorporated in the standard employment packages - and we will call that progress. I'm sure that some companies went through the same sort of ordeal when they operated free, loose, and fast for years until they became unionized, then the entire culture of the company changed.
But in the case you cited; I don't think it is right to expect a company jump through hoops because one individual decides to change their gender. If someone makes such a life-changing decision as a gender change then they can include a job change as part of that package. The problem these days is that attorneys are quick to say, "we have to do this or that to comply" instead of fighting it. The days of Perry Mason are gone forever.
And "Bob" is now neither a man or a woman, he is a transgender, or a man that talks too much!

There are thousands of companies that have not had their "Bob" yet and are unfortunately not very well equipped to handle that situation. The term "there will be lawyers" comes to mind if they don't handle correctly. In the case of the production company that I sited, it's Hollywood, they are Progressive and willing to make the changes but not everyone has the resources or the interest in meeting the needs of that person which is why we will inevitably have laws to enforce the access of the Bob's of the world. Much like Handicap Access (remember when there were no ramps?), there will be acceptance, at least in the equality department, whether we like it or not.

Big1234, there are actually a number of variants that fall outside of the typical two sexes. For example, there are people born with both male and female sex organs; they are called hermaphrodites. See the attached article from Scientific American, a highly respected scientific journal.

If you are in your 30s and still struggling to answer what a woman is my apologies of behalf of our public education system I know the system has failed you to educate you properly in basic biology. Biology and science has defined me by the ability to procreate, with XX chromosome and other abilities and capabilities that are unique and inate to my nature, I possess an internal unique anatomy that can't be replicate nor imitated in a lab or invitro. I refuse to allow a biological male to intrude in my personal space in society and in life in general. So we can make it clear there are only 2 gender MALE (XY chromosome) AND FEMALE (XX chromosome) ANYTHING ELSE IS A DEVIATION OR DEFECTS FROM YOUR HUMAN ANATOMY, PHYSIOLOGY and CHEMISTRY I am not an expert in neither area so I will.leave it alone for someone else who can have the knowledge but not the agenda to explain of why.
