That very well probably happened.
Let's be clear though, the hostages were only one part of Carter's demise, unprecedented inflation, unprecedented interest rates, weak leadership, Moscow Olympics, the Iran hostage rescue fiasco and many more episodes of weak leadership was the cause of the Carter demise. Hell of a nice guy, great leadership with the habitat for humanity, but just was not cut out to be President.
