IMO Trump has very publicly used his wealth and braggadocio to take the piss out of the legal system for decades. Depending on your perspective you can either love him or hate him for it. However, if you willfully & repeatedly fuck around (and do it on tape), eventually you're gonna find out, the rule of law ain't no joke. It would be well for everyone to reflect what a miserable day this is in the annals of American history. With the exceptions of Aaron Burrs trial for treason and Nixons resignation we simply have never seen such an unmitigated decay of our reputation as a stable democracy.
Regardless of ones political leanings it is clear that this is what an empire in decline looks like. Lincoln famously said: America will never be defeated from outside. If we falter and lose our freedom, it will come from the inside.
Maybe the Republicans are responsible. Maybe the Democrats are responsible. It does not really matter any more. One by one, day by day, we watched our civic dignity degrade with as much interest or engagement as a teenager listening to a lecture on horticulture.
A former president, who 78 million Americans voted for in his failed reelection bid, has been indicted on 7 counts and will most likely be convicted on at least one.
And most would still vote for him again. This is not sanity. This is a people who have stopped believing in themselves, in the greatness and illustrious vision of their founding, in the strategic compromises and altruism which have nurtured our institutions which petty minds now denigrate as corrupt for committing the crime of not agreeing with their own pettiness instead of the best possible good for the most possible people.
Trump told Americans our whole system is crumbling. He was right. But he never mentioned that he was a symptom of that and not a cure.

Biden informed the DOJ that he had the documents in his possession and then willingly gave the them back.
Trump repeatedly lied about it. He then tried to cover up what he did. He then claimed he as the authority to declassify the documents when he admitted he didn’t have that authority (on tape). And then there’s the matter of his pool flooding and destroying the servers that contained the surveillance footage of the storage area.
