In fact, we would be more of a banana republic if laws didn’t apply to the rich and powerful and that they could commit serious crimes with impunity. Trump has committed many serious crimes; the Georgia case is even potentially worse than the documents case. In just the document case, Trump can get a maximum of 440 years if convicted.

I believe Hillary was criticized for being careless with her server/emails, but she didn’t actively hide docs and obstruct an investigation, and whatever she did was not found to be criminal acts.
If Biden is eventually found to have committed crimes, take him down too.

In 2018, Trump signed into law the mishandling of confidential government documents as a felony. He’s now being prosecuted under that law.
Trump admitted on tape that he knew he couldn’t declassify confidential documents and that he knew the process through which he can declassify the documents. That was contained in the indictment.
Would Trump have been lenient with Hillary? Of course not.
Biden should afford Trump no leniency here.
Add the other two serious cases for which he will likely be indicted, and the scenario that Trump attempts to flee the country to avoid spending the rest of his life in prison becomes more and more plausible.

We can look at it as election interference but I think the DOJ is just looking at it pragmatically.
DJT did something very wrong. By his own admission, he has committed an egregious crime against the United States of America.
If they don't prosecute at all then it makes a farce of our classified information policies, procedures, and laws. That would no doubt lead to many more politicians doing similarly stupid things thinking that they will get away with it also.
DOJ thinks they have a pretty rock-solid case. They simply wouldn't go after a former president unless they think they have a 99.99% chance of winning. That being the case, do you go ahead with prosecution now even though it appears to be election interference, or do you wait for him to possibly get re-elected then have a shit-show that is 1,000 times worse?
And keep in mind, the real reason DJT filed as a presidential candidate for 2024 elections so far ahead of time is that he probably thought that he would be shielded from prosecution by doing so. Is that the sort of game we want politicians, of any party, to become comfortable with? I mean could I file as a presidential candidate and avoid prosecution, then the day after the election go ahead and file again for the next one 4 years out? How long could this game go on?
There really is only one right thing to do in this case and that is to assert that no one is above the law, and cute little games of trying to avoid prosecution will not work.

As Presiden he could move the docs to Mar a Lago or even to his ford Mustang if he had one. He, as President, can de classify anything he wants. As I pointed out in an earlier blog most classified documents are innocuous and even ones labeled Top Secret are often anything but. CNN and all the networks get their scoops from classified docs turned over to them by their contacts in CIA, etc.
The DOJ could have handled the situation at the start better , instead of ratcheting up a search warrant they could have used pressure to get the docs voluntarily. Possibly used the threat of civil
