Downtown LA looks like Bogota, and not in a good way.
Downtown Santa Ana feels like you are in Mexico. I panicked while shopping there about not having my passport to come back into the US.

If you're going to Albuquerque...
Go visit the Hyatt Regency Tamaya 
Stay North of the 40 --- South side isn't where you want to be ... The more north the better, Rio Rancho is your friend
Santa Fe is only 45 minutes North of Albuquerque
El Pinto is a must dining experience
Hatch chiles are served everywhere you go
They have 85 octane gas, I think it's still around 2 bucks a gallon there, and they have a lot of Texaco stations --- they used to be very prevalent out here but not anymore ...
Lots of great Pueblo Indian cultural centers
They have Cracker Barrel and Waffle House there in Albuquerque too
It does get cold there in the winter months, but not that bad... Summer gets around 90 something but cools off at night in the 50's & 60 's cause it's a Mile High City ... You'll get some wind which will make for dust storms too, but overall it's not such a drastic weather change as leaving California for the South or Midwest or the Northeast ...
