I was lucky enough to see Tony Bennett perform at the Sardine Bar in Chicago (holds only 50 people) and he was amazing.
He lived a long and memorable life.

He was such a good man. Marched with Martin Luther King in Selma, Alabama, in '65. Was literally stripped of his stripes for fraternizing with a black soldier during WW II, forced to dig up graves as punishment.
So I guess he was "woke" before the term was coined. Would you Repuglicans who smirk at "woke" people disagree with what Bennett did? Then (no surprise) you're racist bastards.
From the linked article about Bennett during WWII being so happy to see a black soldier he'd sung with previously in a band:
“I was thrilled to see a familiar face from back home after being surrounded by strangers for so many months,” Bennett remembered. “He took me with him to a holiday service at a Baptist church he’d found. We wanted to spend the whole day together — it just felt so good to be with a friend.”
Bennett invited Smith to join him for Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and all the fixings for American servicemen. The pair got as far as the lobby of the building the Army was using as a mess hall when they were berated by an irate officer. In the segregated military of the day, the two men were not allowed to be seen with each other at a military function, never mind share a meal together.
“This officer took out a razor blade and cut my corporal stripes off my uniform right then and there,” Bennett wrote. “He spit on them and threw them on the floor, and said, ‘Get your ass out of here!’”
Bennett was reassigned from Special Services to Graves Registration, where he dug up the bodies of American soldiers killed in combat for reburial in military cemeteries. The experience “was just as bad as it sounds,” he recalled.

Here’s my full Tony Bennett story:
I met an attractive blond girl in Chicago and convinced her to meet me at the Sardine Bar later that night, which was located across the street from where I lived.
We hit it off. I remember her sitting on my lap kissing for a couple of hours. At some point, Tony Bennett was introduced; he wanted to have an impromptu performance and we listened to him for an hour while we messed around. The bar was small, but we were seated at a dark corner.
We ended up going back to my place, but as we existed the elevator, her pager goes off (I know, I’m old) and she had to leave.
I remember experiencing the worst blue balls of my life that night. Had to immediately relieve some pressure manually.
So I will forever associate blue balls with Tony Bennett. He will be missed, but I hope to never feel that pain again.

So Italians became part of the mainstream, which wasn't always the case.
Italians were the "shit labor" force of the 20th century. They did not blend in well with the WASP population of the US at the time, and did not speak English as their first language. The military that liberated Italy ran the fascists out, and found a warm, loving, and welcoming population who welcomed them into their homes, and treated them to cuisine they had never experienced before -- pastas, pizzas, seafood, and so much more. GI's came back home with a desire to seek out Italian food.
In the meantime, Italian-Americans were endearing themselves to the population at home with their craftsmanship, their food, their service and sacrifice to America, but also through music. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, Perry Como, Connie Francis, and many more Italian-American singers were flooding the music clubs, and the Victrola was spinning their records every evening.
Italians are Caucasians by race...but they gained acceptance into America through hard work and bringing their best to our great country. They separate themselves from the immigrants of today. Old Italian-Americans referred to Italy as the "Old Country." Many new immigrants refer to their native land as "My Country," not accepting America as their country, but rather just a place to capitalize on. A lot can be learned from the Italian-Americans made it happen...wake up new immigrants and pay attention!!!!
