IMO: Barbie is doing big box office for the same reason Star Wars: The Force Awakens did: branding. Little girls are insisting their mothers take them to this because IT'S BARBIE! Many of those mothers have the same programming: IT'S BARBIE!
At the same time, middle-aged white suburban feminists (many of whom overlap with the foregoing groups) are also going to this because SMASH THE PATRIARCHY!
Having seen the movie, some of the first two groups have had less than favorable reactions. Which gives me hope that the inevitable Barbie 2 will be The Last Jedi of this franchise.
