I was just on the phone with my relatives and a friend of mine in Maui .
The entire northwest portion of the island is on fire. Lahaina, Kaanapali , Kapalua (Areas)
It's really bad, some have categorized it as " Apocalyptic " ! Kihei and Wailea are safe but smoke everywhere.
I'm trying to find a live feed and I'll post the link if I can find one.

I’m listening on the radio to a resident of one of the smaller communities there explain how they had to ditch the car and run toward the ocean, as the wind blown fire razed the homes. He could not believe his eyes as heat and wind literally detonated the power line beams in front of him and they had to duck to avoid splinter shrapnel.

Wind died down and finally allowed planes to fly over.
Battle hardened fire fighters and aviators wept at the sight of devastation.
It was that bad.

This is an absolute tragedy, death toll is now at 53 and will probably rise. I've been reading some of the stories of the survivors and it's absolutly heartbreaking, they had no time to get out. Families were trapped in their vehicles and smoke suffocated people, I don't see much humor in this blog but it's truly gloom.

I visited the exact area that was devastated by the fires twice last year. It’s really sad what has been lost. I can’t believe the entire Lahaina area burned down.
The huge 150 year old Banyon tree was severely burned but is still standing (probably won’t survive) and Mick Fleetwood’s restaurant also burned down amongst everything else that was lost. Tragic.

Back on topic, I have never been to Maui, I had planned to, but now that is gone.
The Big Island has it fair share of fires, and that brought in my interest, as I have history there.

I saw a social media post of video just before fires broke out. The winds were so heavy that some powerline poles were being blown down. It suggests ignition by electrical shorting of the grid.
Seem plausible.

One of the few times Jack and I agree. Wind most likely started it, but that’s only half the problem.
The alert system in Maui is so bad that alarm sirens never went off, and automatic text messages did not go out across the entire area until it was way, way too late. And listening to how local leaders deflect the question about why alarms never went off on time screams that they have no good answers and incompetence is rampant.
(Not that there were a lot of people to choose from).
