Is the Pac 12 dead?
Aug 9 2023 06:14PM more by remo_williams

Wow, conference realignment is really something this year.

Down to 4 members?

Crazy - and here I thought the Big 12 was dead after loosing their two dominant programs, yet it looks like they will survive with their additions.

I wonder whom the Pac12 might attract to make up for their really big losses.

I doubt they will be able to attract anyone from the other 'power' conferences that haven't moved recently.

I wonder who they might pick from the "also ran" conferences.

The responsibility for this debacle lies at the feet of the current and former Pac 12 commissioners. Their failure to keep pace with TV deals and and somehow fail to know which way the wind was blowing and watch their only true blue chip program, USC, flirt with and eventually marry their rival conference along with UCLA coat tailing them created an untenable situation. Colorado left but they are terrible but it created an every man for themselves situation where the other decent football programs bolted as soon as they could. Instead of going HARD for Texas and Oklahoma when the Big 12 was in serious trouble two years ago, the Pac 12 was easily out maneuvered by the SEC.

This is a terribly embarrassing situation for West Coast football fans who like the idea of regional rivalries and us against them rooting. Any Pac conference that emerges after this will be a B level group with little national attention or prime television slots. Stanford and Cal may actually end up in the ACC not by choice but by necessity. Can you imagine having to fly to Rutgers or East Lansing to play tennis or volleyball?

I think (hope) this will not be permanent and some sort of group of four (West, East, Mid West, South) super conferences can eventually be created to keep geographical sanity intact but with no NCAA leadership at all it might be awhile before that happens.

Seems the PAC12 is toast.

WTF does the Tournament of Roses do for Rose Bowl match ups?

They must be pissed. They actually have their shit together.

Its always been Big10 vs PAC12 like forever.

The Rose Bowl is now part of the college playoff system, so it is no longer the B10-P12 host.

The whole system is obviously corrupt with coaches making millions and schools of higher learning (haha) becoming nothing but pro sports training grounds while education goes up in a cloud of woke smoke.

Notsofast is spot on.

Of the power five, the two bottom conferences in revenue were Pac12 at a reported 580 million & Big 12 at 100 million LESS..... yet the Big 12 is said to pay their schools 42 to about 45 million each - 5 million (or more) PER SCHOOL.

OU & UT are splitting the 100 million to leave a year early to join the SEC.

Reports are for UCLA & USC that figure is double in them leaving.

Wow.

@ BallsDeep

And it will get worse now that athletes can get paid for their likeness. (NIL)

What college won't work that to the maximum benefit in helping these kids market themselves and pocketing a bit of that themselves.

The bigger programs already have huge media staffs, marketing, liscensing & promotions, etc. etc., It adds more to the recruiters pitch in getting top tier talent to a school.... "and we can run your marketing campaign & help you cash in NOW, not 3-4 years from now."

Don't you want to buy your mama that new house or car?

I'm torn between Stanford either going independent/joining the ACC (at least in football), or burning it all down and going the way of the Ivies. The latter would be a real shame given their tradition, but honestly, the student body wasn't exactly rocking the stadium even during their glory years of the previous decade, and attendance has been absolutely abysmal now that the program is in the cellar. Maybe they should just bite the bullet and stay above what has become a dirty business.

Cal has had budget problems for years. Don't know how they will survive. Oregon State at least has a very good baseball program which should survive in any conference. Washington State ,,, well, I wish them well.

No problem. Over the next several years, the PAC-10 can add:

SDSU
Frenso State
Boise State
Hawaii
Nevada
Idaho

Add that to:

Cal
Stanford
Washington State
Oregon State

And you've got 10 teams and a PAC-10. They suck, but you got 10.
