Show some respect.

My people are devestated. So please stay away.

My cousin lost his home in the fires.

No cause for the fire has been determined, but experts said one possibility was that active power lines that fell in high winds ignited the wildfire that ultimately spread to Lahaina, a coastal town of 13,000 in western Maui that was leveled.

Are you saying to please stay away for now, and let all of the people that need to get home get onto outbound flights at Kahului Airport, and let all of the aircraft with supplies for the survivors get into Kahului --- Then I totally agree ...

Once the supply channels have been sufficiently fulfilled, Tourists will need to visit Maui in the Kihei and Wailea areas to keep the Maui economy flourishing ... I feel sorry for the Kaanapali and Kapalua Resorts, as it may be quite a while until Tourists can return to their locations...

Pete…vacationers should stay away since the hotels/resorts will be used to house the people who were displaced by the fire.

Once they rebuild, then vacationers will be welcomed back.

Mahalo Pete. Appreciate it braddah!

Let's stay on topic please.

The death toll rose to 93 early Sunday, Maui County said in an update
The number of fatalities has put the fire, which devastated the town of Lahaina, as the deadliest wildfire in modern U.S. history, surpassing the 2018 Camp Fire in California that killed 85.
Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said the damage was estimated at close to $6 billion. He said the fires were likely to be the largest natural disaster in the state’s history.
Three law firms filed a class-action suit Saturday against Hawaii Electric, alleging that the destruction "could have been avoided" if the utilities company had de-energized its power lines ahead of the high-wind weather

I'd like to ask a question.

After a major earthquake, or wildfires in which hundreds of homes burn here in California, do they close down Disneyland? Universal Studios? I don't think so.

People come, they enjoy themselves, they spend money, contribute to the local economy, and allow people in the tourism and hospitality industries to maintain their jobs.

I loved Lahaina. From Cheeseburger in Paradise on one end to the Banyan Tree on the other, with everything in between. And inland from there were real people with real lives and real homes. They were our bartenders, Uber drivers, SCUBA instructors, boat captains, and so much more.

But a blanket "don't go" doesn't cut it. No one wants that. Sorry, but there's not enough people homeless from the fires to fill up all of the Kaanapali and Wailea hotels. The services of those hotels may only be needed for a short period of time. Because all of the Haolis who were spending their 20s living in Kihei and working at the brewery, Kimo's, Bubba Gump, Cheeseburger, and all of the other restaurants and stores all up and down front street just lost their jobs permanently. They are breaking their apartment leases and moving back home...and those apartments will be available for everyone who lost their home to the fires.

With the loss of Lahaina, the crown jewel of Maui, less people will be traveling. Prices will be down. I plan to go back as soon as things settle down, frequent my usual Kaanapali hotels, restaurants in the Whaler's Village, go parasailing, and a couple of SCUBA dives. And drink a lot of Mai Tais and Pina Coladas. My contribution to their local economy and keeping the survivors afloat until they can rebuild Lahaina.

Maui nō ka ‘oi. Mahalo.

Clothing of all kinds is needed ...

@petemalloy - what assurances do we have if I donate pants, tops etc to Maui that they will actually get to the folks who need them and not re-sold on the black market?

A few years ago, we donated a similar amount of wearing apparel to a Central American charity and found out most of what was donated ended up going to corrupt criminal gangs. My donation was made to the International Red Cross and at some point along the charities' supply chain it was hi-jacked and benefited no one but criminals.

So what I'm saying is before you donate, make sure your donation gets where its supposed to go - the people who need it most.

Pete - you can PM me and talk about this. Taking advise of charities to donate to based on a blog on HX probably won't make it past the one's in my logistics operation who make these decisions.

But, hey. Let's talk. I'll tell them that PeteMalloy might know something about this.

@YellowB

Yeah when things settle down. I get it! The economy needs tourism. However the families don't need tourists taking selfies when they're still pulling bodies out of the ocean. Give the families time to grieve. That's all I'm saying.

I can agree with that. But a month or so should do it. They'll need to get back to work at the resorts and remaining restaurants and bars.

I suspect they'll set up some sort of FEMA village for construction workers who will come from the mainland, with the amount of construction personnel in the islands it would take 10 years to rebuild Lahaina...it needs to get done in 1-2 years.

I was there during the fire, but fortunately was not on the Kaanapali side when it got bad. The fires were popping up all over, and on Monday the fire near Kula was the worst. I was trying to get a dinner reservation in Lahaina on Tuesday, but I couldn't get a reservation, so I stayed in Wailea. That might have saved my life, and for sure not having to sleep outside overnight. Getting out of that side of the Island was near impossible, and those that did, came around the long way once they allowed people to leave and it took hours. Fortunately I was able to leave on Wednesday, so I was lucky.

A lot of the locals don't like the tourists, so many will use this as an excuse to tell people not to visit, but other than Lahaina, Kaanapali and Wailea are unscathed, but it still wouldn't be a good time there.

This was a devasting event, and the death toll could end up double or even higher. It's a mess over there and it wouldn't be a good time to visit regardless. Let the locals get a taste of their economy without tourism, and visit other Islands. I wouldn't go there probably for a year. Most people don't go on vacation to be inconvenienced, and there will be a lot of inconvenience for the foreseeable future.

The four locations that I listed were from my Cousin who lives in Kihei Maui - the neighborhood close to Nalu's - for those who are familiar with Kihei ...

Hawaii is 3 hours behind us, but a little later, I'll call over to Maui and ask the relief center if they are receiving cartons at their site and if they have adequate storage facilities for the hundreds of cartons that are coming to them from myself and my neighborhood.

I will report back when I know more ...

One thing I know for sure, is that you want your shipment to be delivered as deep as possible into their system as to avoid transferring to the correct site, cause that is where the breakdown occurs in your donations getting to the people in need...

I agree with everything Yellowb2 mentioned ...

We will all need to support Maui now, in the near future with travel and forever ...

It's truly a very special place, and the people of Maui are truly very special as well ...

It will take years to rebuild Lahaina, but cities like Kahului, Wailuku, Kihei, Wailea, Makena need the continuing support. Kaanapali and Kapalua are north of Lahaina and may be a little harder to get to for a while, but they also will need everyone's support ...

A couple of thoughts:

1. Let’s play nice. We all have connections to Hawaii on some level, and it seems we have common ground.

2. I think the locals have a bitter choice. They may not like tourists and outsiders in general, but they need as much help as they can get, while still maintaining local pride.

3. What ever was there before the fire is gone, what is rebuilt will be something new. Let’s accept that, but also trust in the caretakers of the community to know what is best for their people.

4. Donating clothes locally does not make sense, in terms of value for the dollar. It will cost more to ship stuff from the mainland to Maui than for the clothes to be actually bought there. Donating $$$ will help more people.

5. If you *have* to donate something, (and I know this sounds tacky) but a high value gift card to someplace like Costco or Walmart. As stupid as it sounds, getting them out of the house/shelter, and shopping, and letting them feel in control of their smallest of choices can have a profound positive effect towards healing and rebuilding community. Just be sure if you do donate it is to a credible (and verified) recovery provider.

6. Shelter and services as extremely limited out there right now, so they are turning away volunteers mainlanders because there is no safe place to out them and locals need the limited resources currently available.

Hard to imagine so many casualties. I know brushfires can move quickly, but this must have been crazy fast to overwhelm so many people. And to think hundreds still unaccounted for. I hope more and more people turn up.
